Make the Road CT knows that a commitment to Black lives and futures is a commitment that furthers all futures in Connecticut and in our country. Our country and its economy were built on the exploitation and dehumanization of Black people. It is this painful reality that has made possible the exploitation and dehumanization of all people within our systems and institutions for over 400 years.
The Racial Wealth Gap Begins With Our Tax Code

I wrote a similar headline for a Shelterforce article several years ago. That article was about tax programs—those that aid in the building of assets for people who already have a substantial amount of assets, and those that help people with minimal to no assets. In digging into the topic and through conversations with advocates, it became evident to me how the disparate treatment of these groups of earners by our tax code could bolster them financially or hinder their ability to avoid debt and save for the future...

Two full-time positions opening at a fast-growing grassroots non-profit social enterprise in new Haven. Our mission is to build the refugee and immigrant women through job training, education, and organizing.
We are seeking a driven, creative and knowledgeable marketing director to drive our mission, brand recognition, and sales into the next stage. We are a small but growing team - the position will involve a high degree of responsibility, ownership over the future of the organization, and opportunity for professional and personal growth.
Reporting to the Development Director, the Marketing director will have overall responsibility for the development of Havenly’s brand using promotion and advertising strategies, including communications about its mission and work, digital marketing to increase sales, donor communications, and other lead generation strategies.
The role of the Fellowship Director at Havenly is to plan and execute Havenly’s 6-month Community Café Fellowship, which runs twice per year (June – November and December – May) with 15 fellows per cohort.
The key objectives of this fellowship are to:

- Build women’s sense of self-confidence and personal agency.
- Support women in leaving survival jobs and entering longer term career paths.
We fulfill these goals by hosting a range of classes and workshops that fellows participate in for the first two months of each Fellowship, and by providing 4 months of on-the-job training at the Havenly cafe.

United Way of Greater New Haven Releases Workforce Development RFP

UWGNH is committed to helping all members of our community get on a path to financial stability. To achieve this goal, workforce development programs need to be able to address the unique needs of all job seekers. One way that agencies achieve this is through having access to unrestricted, flexible funds that can be used to enhance existing program dollars to help job seekers achieve better employment outcomes. This grant opportunity will provide flexible funds to existing workforce service providers. These funds can be utilized to remove barriers for job seekers to participate and complete trainings as well as secure and retain employment.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
*Transportation
*Childcare expenses
*Stipends
*Technology needs
*Job search support
*Uniforms
*Other related work supports
Organizations that apply for these funds must have programs that support ALICE and below job seekers to achieve job attainment on a career pathway with demonstrated career mobility. Prioritization will be given for programs that have demonstrated the ability to successfully serve underserved communities such as but not limited to, communities of color, low-income, female head of households, re-entering individuals, individuals experiencing homelessness, immigrants, and people with disabilities.

As you may know, the childcare system is Broken. Families pay too much, educators make too little and programs receive subsidy amounts that only cover 50% the true cost of care with subsidies that have not increased since 2015. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO BE HEARD! Morning Without Childcare
The entire economy rests on the shoulders of childcare and it is on the verge of collapse. If we want to have high-quality, affordable, safe and joyful care and education for our children we must change the way we pay for it. BE PRESENT TUESDAY, MARCH 15!
If the system continues to expect that a family of 4 earning $100,000 pays 40% on childcare costs, we will continue to lose workers. It makes more fiscal sense for a family member to leave the workforce than to work. SHARE YOUR FEELINGS FROM 8:00-9:00 AM ON THE NEW HAVEN GREEN!
If our industry continues to pay educators $13.25 per hour (on average) we will continue to have a workforce shortage. In Connecticut there are currently 1,500 active postings for Early Childhood Educator and four out of five child care programs have staff vacancies. Trained, experienced educators can work at Amazon and make twice as much as they would caring for young children. WE MUST STOP PAYING WOMEN TO LIVE IN POVERTY!
If we expect programs to achieve quality and pay educators a livable wage on subsidy rates that are at 50% the true cost of care and were last increased in 2015, we are making it impossible for them to survive. 62% of programs across the state are operating at a loss. DEMAND THAT THE STATE INCREASES OUR SUBSIDIES! Morning Without Childcare

Featuring artist Michael Zack
In a sense, artist Michael Zack is asking you to fill in the blanks as he exhibits A PART OF THE STORY at New Haven’s City Gallery. His haunting, figurative work will be on display from March 11 - March 27, with an opportunity to Meet the Artist on Sunday, March 13 from 1pm - 4 pm.
Focusing on the relationships and interaction of figures and how they can be expressed in form and color, Zack eschews facial features and clothing detail in his work. The characters become anyone and everyone, yet uniquely individual and somewhat mysterious.
Are they people you know? Are they people the artist knows? Zack never reveals names, but says, “they are frequently, but not always based on people I know and have had the opportunity to observe as they go about their daily lives.”
Taken out of those contexts and rearranged into a panorama that has a narrative all its own, Zack invites you, the viewer, to interpret them on yourself. “Bearing in mind,” he says, “that each image is only part of the story.”
The interrelationships of the figures and the movement within the panoramas are supported by the vibrant, subtle and nuanced range of colors within the work. As to process, Zack explains, “Because of the pandemic, access to the printmaking studio has been restricted. I have been trying to translate what I have been doing in printmaking to painting. Each medium has its own distinct process and that process is instrumental in determining the direction of each work.”
Zack received his art education at The Brooklyn Museum Art School, The Silvermine School of Art and Creative Arts Workshop. His work has been shown at City Gallery in New Haven, The Silvermine Guild Arts Center in New Canaan, where he is a member, The New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the Community Gallery of the Brooklyn Museum, the Attleboro Museum in Attleboro, MA, the Paul Mellon Arts Center, Wallingford, CT, the Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA, The Bruce Kershner Gallery at the Fairfield Library and the Katonah Museum among others.
A PART OF THE STORY is free and open to the public, and runs March 11 - March 27, with a chance to Meet the Artist on Sunday, March 13, from 1pm - 4 pm. City Gallery is located at 994 State Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Gallery hours are Friday - Sunday, 1pm - 4 pm, or by appointment. During regular hours, visitors are required to wear a mask and observe social distancing protocols. For the reception, proof of vaccination will be required for entry, and masks are required. For further information please contact City Gallery, info@city-gallery.org, www.city-gallery.org.

Affordable housing has become an increasingly dire global issue. Be it rent or homeownership, the unaffordability of homes has been on the rise. A look at U.S. Census data illustrates a sharp decline in homeownership in recent decades. Although Millennials were the most populous generation by 2019, they only contributed to homeownership at a rate of 47.9%. Contrastingly, Gen-X’s homeownership rate stood at 69%, following the silent generation at 77.8%. Trends of generational decline in homeownership are mirrored in other parts of the world, such as in the U.K. where rates have steadily dropped from 71% in 2003 to 64% by 2018. Many experts point to affordability as a large reason for this decline.
