      TracFone/Straighttalk (Walmart's minute plan): Partnering with Safelink Wireless to enroll clients in free minutes, assistance with bill pay, waiving reactivation fees, setting clients up with data and texting packages.       Verizon: suspending late fees/re-connection fees, bill assistance, and getting extra minutes with proof of poverty, unemployment due to COVID. Best way is to apply online through the account. We could probably help clients do this!

      AT&T: free/reduced cost wifi/hotspots through your phone, unlimited data for all existing clients, and providing services at $10 per month for families with no income, low income, or financial strain due to COVID. Will extend the $10 per month plan after COVID crisis. Online is the most officiant way to apply due to the high number of callers (per info on website).

      Cricket: dial 611 to enroll in any COVID relief programs. Waiving re-connection fees, and all service fees on payments. Can use Bridge Pay to pay current bills in future months, over a longer period of time, and/or smaller payments per billing cycle. Includes minute plans. As the situation with COVID-19 escalates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending face mask or face covering when you are in any public space. Following the instructional videos below you can make mask for yourself then share the videos with a friend. Remember to sterilize you mask before every use, including the first use. You can do this by placing the mask in boiling water for at least 10mins. Allow  the mask to dry completely, if possible in sunlight. Also do not forget to cover the rest of you face. The second video below shows how to make a basic face shield. Cloth masks do not protect you from COVID-19,  they reduce your likelihood of spreading COVID-19 if you have it. Wearing a mask is done in addition to, not in substitution of social distancing.

GNH Chamber Graduate Student Loan Grants

The Graduate Student Grant Program provides direct payments to Graduate Student Loan servicers for up to $10,000 over two years, paid in semi-annual installments. Applications are due by Friday, October 2, 2020.

Applicants to this program must:
• Either have earned a graduate degree in the past five years or will be earning a graduate degree by June 2021
• Either be employed or be promised future employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a public service nonprofit organization* (The employer must have current 501c3 status with the IRS)
• Work for a nonprofit in one of the following municipalities: Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, East Haven, Guilford,  Hamden, Madison, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Wallingford, West Ha ven or Woodbridge
• Have previously received need-related student loans through such vehicles as the GSLA (Stafford) or NDSL (Perkins) programs during their graduate studies
• Have a personal annual income of less than $60,000 at the time of the award
* Qualifying nonprofits are: human services, arts, environment, community development organizations
If awarded, the program will forward payment directly to the Loan Servicer for four consecutive periods (over two years) during which the applicant must remain employed by a nonprofit that meets the criteria described.  See the attached brochure for details and the application form.

Virgin Mobile USA is offering free wireless phone service to more than 107,000 needy Connecticut residents.

 

Virgin's Assurance Wireless service is available to residents who already qualify for Medicaid, food stamps, Section 8 housing, or one of a dozen other state and federal support programs, officials say. Under the universal access program, recipients get a cell phone and 250 free minutes of wireless voice service a month, said Virgin Mobile spokesman Jack Pflanz.

 

Virgin Mobile USA is one of the prepaid wireless units of Sprint Nextel. With unemployment in Connecticut at 9.1 percent, "people need to be connected if for no other reason than to be able to apply for and obtain a new job," said Grace Boehm, director for Assurance Wireless. Pflanz said Virgin's universal cell phone access program is a continuation of one started in the 1980s during the Reagan administration which required the old phone companies to make landline service universally available to everyone, including the needy. Virgin's program, which began in four states several years ago, has since expanded to 19, including Connecticut. The estimate of the size of Assurance's Connecticut market is based on the number of residents qualified to receive food stamps, Pflanz said. Customers eligible for Assurance Wireless include those who participate in Medicaid (Title 19), Food Stamps/SNAP, State Administered General Assistance Program, Section 8 Housing, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Child Care Certification, State Supplement to the Aged, Blind or Disabled, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, Energy Assistance Program, State Appropriated Fuel Assistance Program, Refugee Program, Personal Care Assistance Program, Rental Assistance Program, Eligible Individual living on Native American Tribal Lands, Transition Child Care or ConnPACE.

All goods will be sold for a nominal price and the sale will be cash only. All items are sold and donated to non-profit organizations, New Haven area charitable organizations and the Yale community. Our warehouse will be “re-stocked” between sale days therefore our inventory will be just as good if not better on the second Sale Day.

 

Please take note:

 

  • Items will only be available for pick up during the designated Sale Day dates and times. Individuals and organizations will not be allowed to visit the warehouse before this time, place “dibs” on items of interest, or gain access before 10:30 am on the sale days.
  • Sale Days are open to by invitation to New Haven area schools, government agencies and charitable organizations with proof of 501(c)(3) status only. Please bring business cards, letterhead or other documentation such as an IRS 501(c)(3) letter for your non-profit or a current Yale issued ID.  If you will be sending patients or clients to pick up items for their own personal use please provide them with a letter to this effect, printed on your organization’s letterhead.
  • This invitation is for your organization.  Please do not pass this invitation on to friends or other members of the general public.  Please do not pass this invitation on to listservs or post it on any web sites, including those for non-profits.  Last year’s inclusion of the general public created difficulties and reduced the availability of important items for non-profits.

  • Parking is limited.  Please car pool.

Connecticut Early Childhood Funders Collaborative

A partnership through the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy

Position Description—Collaborative Manager

 

ABOUT THE COLLABORATIVE

The Connecticut Early Childhood Funders Collaborative (Collaborative) is a broad and diverse coalition of members of the Connecticut philanthropic community committed to the successful realization of the goals identified in PA 11-181, An Act Concerning Early Childhood Education and the Establishment of a Coordinated System of Early Care and Education and Child Development.

 

The Collaborative comprises 14 funders from around the state who bring many years of experience in supporting and operating programs that serve the needs of children and families. Members of the Collaborative believe a partnership between government and philanthropy can help us pursue our common goal of designing a comprehensive statewide early childhood system. The flexibility with which the philanthropic community can provide fiscal and programmatic resources, coupled with state government's access to data, federal policies, and public-sector resources will lead to the best thinking and outcomes for young children and their families.

 

The Connecticut Council for Philanthropy (Council) is the host organization and fiscal sponsor for the Collaborative.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Collaborative Manager reports to the president of the Council and is responsible to the Collaborative to ensure that its mission is effectively realized.  The CM works closely with the Office of Early Childhood on behalf of the Collaborative. This is envisioned as an up to 20 hour/week position.

 

Specific responsibilities may include:

 

  • Perform development and policy activities related to the Collaboratives interest in promoting early childhood systems building and the successful development of the OEC
  • Manage grant activities, including submitting grant requests and reports related to funding for theCollaborative
  • Perform initial review of requests for funding from the Collaborative in preparation for Collaborative review
  • Monitor funded activities, contracts and reporting
  • Prepare and distribute a monthly update to members of the Collaborative and partners
  • Collect, synthesize and analyze key data related to implementation of OEC as related to support  financial and otherwisefrom the Collaborative and movement towards goals of the Collaborative
  • Mobilize members to respond to relevant policy or advocacy issues as they arise
  • Foster engagement among members, including providing resources, encouraging participation, facilitatingconnections, and maintaining regular communication
  • Provide staff supporand coordination for all Collaborative meetings, including preparation and distribution ofagendas, member communication, scheduling and logisticsfacilitating discussions as needed, and performingfollow-up activities
  • Work with the Council and Collaborative co-chairs to develop and maintain Collaborative budget
  • Represent the Collaborative at meetings, as necessary.
  • Strategize outreach activities, including development and distribution of materials, and handling media or press inquiries, in partnership with Collaborative and OEC leaders
  • Work with the Collaborative co-chairs and members on the development of meeting agendas; manage and participate in the creation of a historical narrative of the work of the Collaborative and its engagement in early childhood systems development
  • Work with the Council and co-chairs to increase participation by other Connecticut funders in the Early Childhood Funders Collaborative

 

REQUIREMENTS

The Collaborative Manager should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualifications:

  • Ability to work closely and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and at different professional levels
  • Ability to collaborate and function as part of a larger team
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, manage multiple responsibilities, and prioritize tasks
  • Strong analytic, research, and critical thinking skills
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Comfortable and articulate when speaking in public
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Familiarity with the causes and implications of the current early childhood issues and opportunities, or willingness to learn about these issues quickly
  • At least 5 years experience working in professional settings, knowledge of early childhood and legislative issues preferred
  • Bachelors degree, Masters degree preferred, in public policy, public administration, nonprofit management, social services,  or related field
  • Energy, a sense of humor, and a passion for improving the lives of others
  • Understanding and experience in the philanthropic sector preferred

 

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Communications  keeping collaborative members well informed and documenting the lessons learned and process of development of the Collaborative
  • Attraction and retention of funder interest and participation
  • Sustained level of funding or transition activities to partner organizations

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the region’s largest grantmaker, is accepting applications for the 2014 Responsive Grants process. This grants process is intended to be a source of flexible funding and is open to all requests from nonprofits serving the 20-town region of The Community Foundation for projects and organizational support that meet the eligibility criteria.

Grants awarded in this category range from over $5,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on available funds and terms of grant. Any nonprofit that creates positive sustainable impact in the areas of: arts and culture, basic needs, civic vitality, economic success, quality education, the environment, health and wellness and children and youth is encouraged to apply. In 2013, more than $2.9 million in single and multi-year grants was awarded through the Responsive Grant process; deadline to apply is 5:00 pm on March 28, 2014.

Grants awarded through The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven’s Responsive Grant process are based on The Community Foundation’s commitment to support nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Haven region that strive towards providing the highest quality services and advance ideas, innovations and techniques that improve the quality of life for area residents. It is important that nonprofits continually improve their services and programs by applying what they learn through self-reflection, assessment, evaluation and use of data, knowledge building, risk taking, and the use of sound and prudent financial management practices. It is the belief of The Community Foundation that the best use of the community’s endowment is to invest in nonprofits that 1) display leadership in addressing issues and seizing opportunities in the community, 2) regularly perform evaluation of their services and 3) practice sound programmatic and organizational management. 

The following eligibility criteria applies to all competitive grant opportunities at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven; distributions from permanent unrestricted and preference funds, Community Foundation initiatives and several donor advised funds make grants under this category possible:

March 20, 2020 (New Haven, CT): Calling the impacts of COVID-19 “an unprecedented crisis for our local nonprofit sector and the people it serves,” Community Foundation for Greater New Haven President Will Ginsberg announced today a series of extraordinary steps that The Foundation is taking to address the extraordinary challenges that the sector is facing.

The Community Foundation has been in communication with many local nonprofits over the last several weeks to understand the impacts that COVID-19 is having. “We have heard from organizations on the frontlines of this battle - both the healthcare and mental health institutions and the providers of basic needs such as food and shelter – that the demands on them are increasing dramatically,” Ginsberg said. “In addition, many organizations lack the infrastructure to support their staff working remotely. Many organizations have had to cancel important fundraising events in this environment, leading to major shortfalls in revenue, and many arts and culture institutions are essentially shut down.”

In partnership with United Way of Greater New Haven, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is establishing a Greater New Haven COVID-19 Community Fund. The organizations will work together in promoting the fund to donors and in decision-making as to grants from the fund.

“In times like these, we all need to work together,” Ginsberg said of the partnership with United Way. “Having one fund rather than two separate efforts by our two organizations is the best solution both for the nonprofit community and for donors in Greater New Haven.”

"We know it will take all of us doing our part to get through this pandemic,” stated Jennifer Heath, United Way of Greater New Haven President and CEO. “We are proud to partner with the Foundation to provide expertise and relationships that will facilitate a rapid, community-facing response to the Coronavirus outbreak as needs emerge."

The Community Foundation is launching the fund with contributions and commitments totaling more than $1 million. “With the generous support of our leading donors and with The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven contributing approximately $500,000 of its own resources, we are grateful to have amassed such a significant amount in such a short time to assist local nonprofits,” Ginsberg added.

Members of the community wishing to donate to the Fund can do so at www.cfgnh.org/covid19fund.

In addition, The Foundation is also accelerating payments on approximately $1 Million in existing multiyear grants that under normal circumstances would not be paid until later in the year.

“Putting these grant monies in the hands of our local nonprofits by next Friday, March 27 will be important in their efforts to continue to provide services and meet their financial obligations” said Christina Ciociola, Senior Vice President for Grantmaking and Strategy at The Community Foundation.

The Foundation is also offering recipients of approximately $400,000 in current multiyear project and program grants the opportunity to repurpose them for general operating support so that the funds can be used to ameliorate the impacts of COVID-19, as well.

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the region's largest grantmaker and permanent charitable endowment, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Associate Philanthropic Officer for Grantmaking (APO). The Community Foundation’s mission is to create positive and sustainable change in Greater New Haven by increasing the amount of and enhancing the impact of community philanthropy. Position Summary:

This position supports several grantmaking processes and a nonprofit online giving site, as well as other responsibilities as assigned.

Core Responsibilities:

• The APO will be part of, and support, a team of grantmaking professionals in the execution of department goals;

IRIS- Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (www.irisct.org), a dynamic nonprofit organization in New Haven CT, is seeking a part-time teacher for its Summer Learning Program. The mission of IRIS is to help refugees and other displaced people establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut's communities. IRIS currently serves clients from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba, Congo, and Sudan.

The Summer Learning Program is a free, safe, academically and socially enriching environment for children ages 5-16, weekday mornings from 9:00am-12:30pm. The Summer Learning Program's focus is on English language acquisition, positive socialization and school readiness. This is a multicultural classroom with youth who often do not hear English spoken in their homes.

The lead teacher will coordinate and facilitate daily programming for approximately 35 refugee students, who will be divided into separate groups or gathered together as the teacher sees fit to best promote academic and social success. The lead teacher will organize, use, and supervise volunteers to assist with facilitating lessons and student supervision. With the support of volunteers, the lead teacher will be responsible for assessing and meeting daily needs of students and for creating the best possible learning environment for students, inside and outside the classroom. The lead teacher will be responsible for helping to organize recreational opportunities and accompany students on field trips to sites around the state and for helping to organize visitors to the program.

The ideal candidate will have or be working towards Elementary Education or TESOL certification, or a related field, and will have experience with children in an educational setting. Candidates should also have experience working closely with other adults and, preferably, supervisory experience. Awareness of and sensitivity to cross-cultural issues is a must.

* Conduct rigorous program analysis that supports and validates
scholarship disbursements.
* Effectively translate and report the data to various audiences to

institutions, government agencies, nonprofits, businesses and other
interested parties through delivering the message contained in the data
collected.

* Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.

* Under the direction of the Executive Director, work on special
