Open position - Communications Manager

We Love What Makes You Unique

Your perspective fuels our mission-driven work at United Way of Greater New Haven. We are committed to building a team that is inclusive across race, gender, age, religion, identity, and lived experience. As an organization, we are committed to addressing systemic racism and injustice in our community, our partnerships, and our practices.

Who We Are Looking For

Are you passionate about using your marketing and communications talents as a force for good in our community? Are you the type of person who speaks up for those who need a voice? Can you tell a good story, so good that it helps us build a movement?

If so, our Communications Manager position may be perfect for you.  This is a full-time position, with an annual salary range of $50,000-$55,000 depending on experience.

What you’re great at:

  • You are passionate about our mission. Are you passionate about working towards a world where all our neighbors can not only survive but thrive? Do you want to be a part of helping children, parents, and neighbors access food, education, stable housing, and financial stability? We want a communications professional who cares deeply about the issues that drive our work. Genuine passion shines through and inspires others to join in as donors, volunteers, and supporters.

  • You excel at visual and written storytelling. Do you love to find the emotional center to a great story? Are you adept at communicating information and emotion through images and graphics? Stories are central to our communications strategy. We are looking for a team member who knows how to connect with the audience and make big issues understandable on a human scale.

  • You are social media and web savvy. Do you know the ins and outs of all the major social platforms? Do you have experience managing professional social media accounts? Can you update and edit a website, track and analyze data, and stay in the loop on emerging trends? Do you love creating engaging content? We’re looking for a social media maven who can create content and manage our presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

  • You’re a team player. The Communications Manager works closely with every department at United Way. As part of the four-person Marketing & Engagement department, you will be a part of weekly team meetings and will report to the Senior Director of Marketing and Engagement. You’ll collaborate with our fundraising team to dream up new ways to reach local businesses and individuals looking to give back to the community. And of course, there will be other duties as assigned.

What You Need

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in marketing/communications.
  • Strong communicator in writing and visual mediums.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience managing professional social media and knowledge of platforms.
  • A team player who inspires collaboration and functions decisively.
  • Ability to work with diverse staff and volunteers.
  • Experienced in graphic design, proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Proficient with MS Office365 and demonstrated comfort in learning new software/online tools as needed.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of UWGNH (United Way of Greater New Haven).
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.

Philanthropy, that is ‘voluntary action for public good’ (Payton and Moody, 2008, p. 3), plays a fundamental role in civil society, both here in the UK and beyond. Central to this, the charitable sector is often at the forefront of challenging social and environmental injustice and inequality. In this article we argue that meaningfully engaging children in philanthropic action and charitable giving provides an ideal opportunity for children to critically participate and think about root causes of social issues and injustice...

I start with the pain. A couple times a week I give a speech somewhere in the country about social isolation and social fragmentation. Very often a parent comes up to me afterward and says, “My daughter took her life when she was 14.” Or, “My son died of an overdose when he was 20.”

Their eyes flood with tears. I don’t know what to say. I squeeze a shoulder just to try to be present with them, but the crying does not stop. As it turns to weeping they rush out of the auditorium and I am left with my own futility. What can I say to these parents? What can I say to the parents still around who don’t yet know they may soon become those parents?

This kind of pain is an epidemic in our society. ..

Seven years ago, I decided I wanted to become an impact investor. Before then, no one ever told me it was possible to make investment decisions based on my values rather than just financial returns. Once I learned there was this rising tide of “impact investing,” I was all in.

An American Dream Clean Story

Connecticut Food Bank COO Paul O’Leary explains that becoming an American Dream Clean client--while he receives great value from our cleaning--was about “more than just a cleaning service.” You see how Taichi's relationship with American Dream Clean is "creating a path to college" for her daughter Kiki. And the video helps to tee up that American Dream Clean will need more smart business partners like the Connecticut Food Bank to scale its impact for families like Taichi and Kiki:

More than forty years after Dr. King asked, “Where do we go from here?” American society is still grappling with the question.

From Chicago to Minneapolis to Baltimore, our nation is in the midst of a defining moment of racial, social, and economic change. For communities of color, this moment is particularly stark and has been magnified by the courageous #BlackLivesMatter movement, which emerged in response to a long history of police violence and criminal injustice against black men and women.

Digital Media Curating as a Big Blue Bird

Some rules are meant to be broken to protect your personal space.  In this regard I have learned from teachers who assume Avatar identities to communicate with friend in social media.

I have done the opposite.  At this time tweets from @FreemanWPAATV are mine and I do 99% of the Outreach communication from the organization I manage under this pseudonym. I also wear the costume at community events to increase our awareness with the next generation.

Outreach through Social Media

source: NeighborWork Leaders for Communities

In the past, non-profit organizations had to rely primarily on print media, TV, radio, and direct mailings to advertise their services to potential clientele and funders. However, thanks to the rise of social media within the last decade, non-profits have an opportunity to interact with their constituents more than ever before. Applications such as Facebook and Twitter allow organizations to market themselves with a few clicks of a button.

Although he had limited professional experience in managing social media accounts prior to working at Asian Ameircans for Equality (AAFE) as an AmeriCorps VISTA, Douglas Lim took initiative in updating AAFE's social meida sites, primarily Facebook and Twitter. Through social media, AAFE increased its interaction with other local non-profit organizations and community members. By sharing information about AAFE and news stories relevant to the non-profit's mission, AAFE's "likes" on Facebook sextupled, and their Twitter followers quintupled since July of 2012...

Cronote Remind Button

Useful tool for nonprofits, still in development, feedback welcome: The Cronote Remind button lets website visitors schedule text message and email reminders about your events or services. For nonprofits, the Remind button can be placed next to information about an upcoming event. Event organizers have access to each button's analytics, which can be used to track interest over time. Remind buttons are generated using three pieces of information: name of the event, message, and desired delivery time. Free for nonprofits. Here's an example:
