Nonpartisanship does not mean nonparticipation

Nonprofit organizations have daily contact with large numbers of potential voters, many of whom are underrepresented in the political process. Even though nonprofits by charter must remain nonpartisan and not take sides for a candidate or party, they can still support voting, voter education, voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts. 
 
Help your community and staff register and vote. Learn tips and best practices for nonpartisan voter registration, voter education, candidate engagement and getting out the vote.

Small grants will be available

13358901679?profile=originalNew Haven’s Farnam Center (formerly the Farnam Neighborhood House) not only gives kids a safe place to play basketball and ping pong, create art or get help on their homework. It also helps them learn how to resolve conflicts.

Long known for its recreational and arts offerings, Farnam recently partnered with the nonprofit Rain of Hope to integrate social and emotional learning into all of its programs. 
Rain of Hope’s lessons focus on kindness, listening, respect, mindfulness and collaboration.

The goal is to “introduce children to the fact that our actions are ‘raindrops,’ creating ripples that impact ourselves and those around us,” according to the Rain of Hope website.

The new social and emotional curriculum has given both staff and kids better tools for resolving arguments and calming tempers, says Farnam Executive Director James Cotto.

The entire staff went through workshop training at the beginning of the year and infused the lessons into all of Farnam’s programs. The entire Farnam community, says Cotto, is already seeing positive results. 

“In our afterschool programs we’re seeing a huge reduction in staff intervention with children because we are teaching them how to govern their emotions,” says Cotto. Continue reading.

Position Summary:

URU The Right to Be, Inc., an expanding nonprofit education through the arts production company based in New Haven, Connecticut, seeks a qualified candidate for a Part-Time Social Media Coordinator position. The person hired to fill this position will be tasked with coordinating digital outreach for a national civic engagement tour, fundraising efforts, and communications activities. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of social media platforms, community organizations, collective impact approaches, and the media. He or she will report directly to the Founder and CEO of URU.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain and cultivate social media presence in all channels, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
  • Consistently manage social media postings and interactions following URU  guidelines and voice.
  • Responsible for monitoring and engaging in online conversations with constituents, including responding to questions and comments.
  • Monitor and respond to social media and email inquiries throughout the day.
  • Write and design content for all social media channels.
  • Develop and execute the strategic content schedule for social media.
  • Responsible for collecting and reporting analytics for all social media channels.

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with superior skills in Proofreading and Copy editing.
  • Degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or related field and one year of related social media and graphic design experience or related communications and design experience.
  • Technical knowledge and understanding of multiple social media platforms, metrics, and tracking.
  • Skilled in graphic design.
  • Knowledge of image supply sources, copyright, and registered image uses.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, manage, prioritize, and set goals and meet established deadlines.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness.
  • Personable demeanor

Nonprofits with profiles on giveGreater.org® are eligible to participate in the annual giving event and win thousands of dollars in grant prizes from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and its partner in philanthropy, the Valley Community Foundation.Nonprofits not on giveGreater.org® must register by April 13 to participate in the giving event. 

Nearly 8,000 individuals participated in The Great Give® 2017, which raised nearly $1.3 Million for nonprofits serving The Foundation’s 20-town service area.

New Haven Farms’ nonprofit charitable mission is to promote health and community development through urban agriculture. We transform vacant urban land into vibrant and productive organic farms. Our Farm Manager and volunteer corps cultivate urban farms, and our harvest is made accessible to low-income families who struggle with diet-­related chronic diseases and food insecurity. Farm members receive produce baskets combined with farm education, cooking demonstrations, and nutrition education on a weekly basis. POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Youth Environmental Education Assistant assists in leading the Youth Farm-Based Wellness Program. The purpose of the Youth Farm-Based Wellness Program is to empower children to explore and learn about the environment, food system and nutrition through interactive lessons on an urban farm site. The Youth Environmental Education Intern is responsible for helping instruct children aged 3-12 during the Farm-Based Wellness Program. The Intern’s role takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from June - September for a total of 10 hours per week.

The Youth Environmental Education Assistant is responsible for:

  • Assisting and facilitating weekly youth activities
  • Helping with lesson and material preparation
  • Group behavior management

Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent group dynamic and behavior management skills
  • Bachelor's degree; or in process of obtaining Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental education, or outdoor leadership (preferred but not required)
  • Experience with youth aged 3-12; ability to engage children and direct them in an active teaching environment
  • Ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults
  • Knowledge or interest in gardening, environment, science, health and nutrition, and food systems
  • Bilingual (Spanish) encouraged to apply

COMPENSATION:

This is a paid position from June through September, 10 hours per week, Tuesday and Thursday Evenings, tentative schedule 3-8pm. Compensation commensurate with experience.
