Summer (5)

NHPS has extended the date for the submission of the Request For Qualifications (RFQ) application until 4:00pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. The extension is being implemented to provide organizations additional time to organize the requested supplemental documents and submit detailed information regarding their respective organizations.

The New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) is committed to strengthening the resources available for New Haven youth by bringing together, families, community, schools, peers,  government, neighbors and connecting and focusing these efforts so that they are collective, cumulative, consistent and effective. NHPS manages a variety of state and federal grants that support these goals, helping provide a wide range of services to our students and their families, and is currently reviewing the qualifications of potential partners to help carry out future grant funded initiatives or collaborate on district initiatives.

Schooner Summer Camp has some amazing things in the works for our upcoming summer. Read on to learn about all the wonderful things that will be new for camp this year. We now have programs for ages 4-5, awesome leadership programming for ages 13-14, six additional sailboats, and will be adding more amazing staff members along with our new camp director!

Hi everyone, my name is Cori, and I'm excited to be the new director of Schooner Camp this summer. I've spent my career working with youth and environmental education and can't wait for camp to start. I wanted to share with you some of the cool new things we have in store.

Our youngest campers will now be 4-5 years old and called the Sea Sprites. They will focus on land-based learning and fun activities at camp. They will have an awesome time exploring new habitats, getting dirty, and meeting new critters and creatures around the Sound. Campers must turn four by June 25 and have been previously enrolled in a daycare or preschool program.

Learn the lingo; LIT will be our Leaders in Training program for teens aged 13-14. Teens will take part in team building and leadership enhancing activities as well as develop and practice the skills of working with our younger campers. They will also get a chance to partake in the other awesome activities of camp, including exploration, sailing, and kayaking.

Thanks to a generous donation from The Quassapaug Sailing Center and Joel and Celeste Zackin, camp will have six 420 sailboats to add to our fleet! 420's are the top choice sailboats for many high school and college racing programs. These boats are suitable for two sailors, have two sails, and are quick and easily maneuvered. They will be an awesome new addition to Schooner Camp.

For this summer, we have increased the number of open spots for campers! Schooner Camp has an awesome financial aid program, offering many scholarships for income eligible families. Please contact us for more information. We look forward to making many new friends and working with many more amazing staff members.  Teens under 18 can volunteer with the camp as junior counselors, too!

If you have any questions, comments or thoughts about Schooner Camp, please feel free to reach out, my email is cori.merchant@newhavenlandtrust.org   or Visit www.newhavenlandtrust.org
I look forward to getting to know the Greater New Haven community! 13358903083?profile=original

Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the Schooner program: Denali Foundation, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, The New Haven Yacht Club, Patagonia, The Watershed Fund, Women's Seaman's Friends Society of CT, Greater New Haven Green Fund and many more!

The Summer meals program is looking for volunteers to help with activities at the New Haven Public School Food Services free summer meal mobile sites. At these sites from Jun 29 until Aug 18 either free meals, lunch or supper, is provided to any child aged eighteen or younger. Over 40% of New Haven's children live in poverty and while school is out these free meals are a way for children to get healthy food.We need volunteers to run fun activities to attract the children to the site(s) so they can get food when the food truck or bus arrives. While the food trucks tend to stay in an area for about 30 mins, programming can be longer.  Activities can include music, art, games, reading, etc.

If you are interested in lending your talents, please contact Cathy Davies (cathy.davies@foodcorps.org) or call 858 231 0274.
