What if Marginalized Neighbourhoods Crafted Their Own Handmade, Place-based Economies?

From entrepreneurs in their 20s to established real estate developers, the diversity of people who joined the first few gatherings on neighbourhood economics in Cincinnati had an initiator of the effort, Peter Block, happily stunned.

Thought provoking read: Lessons from our National Park System for Baltimore, Ferguson

For 20 years that we've been traipsing through the national parks, I looked forward to the day when we'd encounter black and brown Americans in such numbers among the visitors that their presence on the trail in Grand Canyon would be unremarkable. Their faces would be radiant with joy as we met among the giant sequoias in Giant Grove, Sequoia National Park. They'd move easily among the other guests at Yellowstone Lodge after a day watching bison and grizzlies in the park. I'd run into…

Nonprofit Board Host not home

If nonprofit boards are the surrogate owners of a nonprofit representing the public/taxpayer's interests, it stands to reason that good governance would mean that the board would sit ever ready to listen and hear the needs, wants and interests of the many stakeholders/constituents of what the nonprofit has to offer. If a board accepts this concept it then must also accept and value the concept of community engagement.

In last week's conference on governance, David Renz of the Bloch…

Pain into Purpose: Community Violence Intervention Workers Tell It Like It Is

For the second year in a row, the Department of Justice, in partnership with LISC, brought together hundreds of community violence intervention practitioners from across the country to share their experiences and insights on the front lines of gun violence and trauma. Their stories and wisdom are reshaping narratives about victimhood and perpetrators, and helping implement solutions to create safer, healthier communities.

“Wounded Healers”: CVI Worker Wellness Takes Center Stage

LISC, with support from the Department of Justice, has been investing intensively in the work and wellbeing of frontline community violence intervention (CVI) workers. A new report on CVI practitioner trauma and strategies for their wellbeing, and a panel at a recent CVI conference, hammer home the urgency of informed, well-resourced support for these critical community servants.

LISC Receives $2M Grant from The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation to Renovate Sports Spaces for Youth in Under-Resourced Communities

With a new $2 million grant from The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, LISC opens a second application round for Game On-Community Places to Play, an initiative that funds the renovation of indoor and outdoor athletic spaces for young athletes, particularly in under-resourced communities. The deadline to apply for a grant is September 5, 2024.
