Social Venture Partners Connecticut
Accepting Applications for
Race Equity Grant Fund

 

Social Venture Partners Connecticut (SVP-CT), a statewide network of individuals advancing equitable solutions for closing Connecticut’s opportunity gap, is currently accepting grant applications for a new philanthropic fund.
 
SVP-CT will provide grants of $25,000 each in unrestricted, general operating support grassroots, community-based, people of color-led organizations addressing systemic causes of racial inequity in Bridgeport and New Haven, Connecticut.
 
This fund is structured as a participatory grantmaking model, which means that grants will be evaluated by a Fund Committee composed of community members and leaders from Bridgeport and New Haven. The number of grants will be determined by the Fund Committee based on the applications received and availability of funds. To date, SVP-CT has raised $200,000 from its network of volunteer Partners to seed the Race Equity Fund.

To apply organizations must:  

  1. Be led (e.g., Executive Director, CEO) by a person of color
  2. Be actively engaged in work that addresses systemic and/or root causes of racially inequitable outcomes affecting underserved people of color
  3. Have a budget of $1,500,000 or less
  4. Serve populations in Bridgeport and/or New Haven

Eligible organizations are encouraged to apply online by 5:00 PM on January 15, 2021. Funds will be distributed by mid-February 2021.

About the SVP Connecticut Race Equity Fund
The Race Equity Fund is part of Social Venture Partners Connecticut's Race Equity Initiative, a response to the existing racial disparities in both opportunities and outcomes in Connecticut.

Closing the opportunity gap requires an explicit focus on systemic change to eliminate racial inequities. The Initiative’s other elements include a pilot program to support nonprofit leaders of color, SVP-CT Partner education regarding systemic inequities and racism in Connecticut, and advocacy on state-wide issues in racial equity.

Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) seeks a skilled, experienced, and enthusiastic leader to oversee all programming and services of a small but rapidly growing social service organization.  The ideal candidate will have experience in providing direct services for people experiencing homelessness (i.e., case management and/or outreach), as well as a demonstrated record of effective staff management and program development.  This is a great opportunity for a hands-on individual looking to facilitate real change while advancing their career in a meaningful way.

 

Mission & Background Information

DESK serves people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity.  We are located in Downtown New Haven, just off the Green.  Our core program provides food assistance and basic needs as well as connections to resources and other services.  DESK will open a Downtown Drop-in and Resource Center in 2021 to provide more intensive site-based outreach services for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness.  For more information on our programs, services, history, and vision, visit us online at www.deskct.org

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Program Oversight – The Program Director will provide general oversight for all programs and services, including performance measurement and program improvement.
  • Staff Management – The Program Director supervises at least two managers, as well as other staff and interns, working with them to develop management skills, carry out responsibilities effectively, and strategize around program operations.
  • Program Development – The Program Director works with the Executive Director, Board members, and staff to improve current programming and develop new programming.
  • Interagency Coordination – The Program Director coordinates services with partners across the system, including direct service providers, oversight agencies, volunteer groups, and others.
  • Leadership – The Program Director provides effective leadership within the agency’s mission through guidance, mentorship, and example.

 

Requirements and Qualities of the Ideal Candidate

 

●        Enthusiasm and passion for mission

●        Advanced knowledge of best-practices in homelessness services, outreach, and case management

●        3+ years experience in direct service provision

●        2+ years experience in staff supervision or management

●        Working knowledge of Greater New Haven homelessness services landscape

 

 

●        Knowledge of best-practices around harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and behavioral health, including the myriad of issues that are parallel to homelessness

●        Excellent communication skills

●        Team player and leadership skills

●         Experience in training staff

●         Experience in some type of customer service

●         Not required:  experience in food services or administration

  

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation includes generous paid time-off and health and life insurance.  Starting salary will be between $47,000 and $55,000, commensurate with demonstrated skills, experience, and background.

General Purpose: 

 

Reporting to the Director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Assistant Director is responsible for developing and implementing financial solicitation programs for annual and capital giving to the Museum, from individuals and organizations, as well as developing and implementing financial and non-financial programs to promote active and ongoing engagement with the scientific and educational missions of the Museum. The Assistant Director will directly supervise a Development Coordinator, and will be responsible for all membership programs at the Museum.

 

Required Education and Experience: 

 

Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in development/fundraising, or other relationship-building areas in complex organizations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Entrepreneurial approach to fundraising, with a keen appreciation for the specific challenges of working with prospects who may lack a direct affiliation and/or involvement with the Museum or Yale University. Knowledge of and proficiency in annual fundraising strategies and techniques.
  • Ability to work regularly and effectively with the Museum Director, Director of Development, other senior members of the Museum, and the university’s academic and administrative leadership. Affinity for the Museum and New Haven and a desire to spread the same feeling to others.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to donors, volunteers, and colleagues as well as University leadership and students. Professionalism, maturity, good judgment, and ability to foster and work well in a team environment. High level of integrity and ability to exercise confidentiality and discretion. Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects with excellent attention to detail. Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn University databases.
  • The ability and willingness to travel periodically and work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Experience in a museum or cultural environment. Appreciation of natural history and science. Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising.

Part-time CHW position at CARE

CARE is looking to hire a part-time Community Health Worker to support participants in a virtual Diabetes Prevention Program. The CHW will help participants to address program barriers and challenges by providing health education, referrals to social services and clinical care, and general support/advocacy. Additionally, this role will help to develop program procedures, recruit and enroll participants, conduct regular home visits (remotely or in-person), and collect research data. The successful candidate will have personal experience managing a chronic disease and be comfortable working with diverse populations in the New Haven community. Other key qualifications include the ability to work as part of a team, attention to detail, and comfort working remotely as well as in-person (according to COVID-19 protocols).

As of Thursday, December 3rd, Fair Haven Community Health Care's COVID-19 testing site will be moving to 293 East Street in New Haven. We are currently offering free COVID testing from our 350 Grand Avenue location. The move to the new space will give us more room to better serve those who want a COVID test. Testing will still be available Monday to Friday with walk-ups welcome from 9:30 am to 12 pm and then from 1 pm to 3 pm. Please call 203-871-4170 for appointment times.

Testing is free and open to everyone. No symptoms or doctor's note required.
