Description Interest
Since 1966, Continuum of Care has helped rebuild the lives of adults with severe and persistent mental illness and/or intellectual disabilities by providing comprehensive housing and home support services, home healthcare, and outpatient clinical care so they may live as fully and independently in the community as possible. The majority of Continuum’s clients and patients live well below the federal poverty level. Each year, the organization rescues approximately 250 individuals from homelessness and it serves more than 1,500 people in the greater New Haven area as well as in Branford, Bridgeport, Hamden, Meriden, Middleton, Norwalk, Southington, Wallingford, and Wolcott.

Welcome to GNH Community, glad to have you join us. Members may post information that they think will be of interest to nonprofits, civic organizations, and the people they serve or the general public. Posting your events early helps minimize scheduling conflicts and allows us to promote your events with alerts to the general public. Your posts are immediately viewable by over 900 members.  We share notice of listed events on Monday and Friday with 6000+ people via Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, Twitter and Instagram. Note that politically partisan, religious or business promotion posts are not allowed.

 

Event Posting Tips:

Your opportunities to connect with other members greatly increases if you include a photo on your profile; don't forget to include a link to your website. Add a picture\ log to your post to increase the likelihood that it will be viewed. To increase “likes” of your post, "like" or comment on the post of other members.

Blogs

When you join GNH Community you automatically have a blog on the site. You can use this blog to share your thoughts and opinions, perhaps even something you wrote for another occasion that you would like to share with a broader audience. You may also share articles or other non-date specific information, resources or  job announcements on your blog page. Using tags facilitates finding post by using these keywords in the search box. You can promote your organization's blog or a blog about your field of expertise using GNH Community just post your blog entry title and a teaser  paragraph with a link back to the complete post on your blog. Blog post are shared every Wednesday.  

Video and Picture Sharing

You can post videos and pictures on GNH Community. Videos are increasingly becoming the medium of choice for nonprofits. You can post promotional videos about your organization, educational videos about your field and public service  announcements. Every Tuesday we feature a video at the top of the GNH Community homepage and share it with our social media network. Check out the videos that have already been posted for ideas and inspiration, create a video, post it on You Tube or Vimeo and share it through a link on the video page. If you give us a couple of weeks of notice we can try to time the featuring of your video with a particular event or an awareness campaign. The best way to use the pictures function is to create an album. An album can be used to tell a story, to document impact or to show progress. We will gladly feature an album if you give us notice of its creation. 

Groups

You can join groups created by members or create your own; this is a great place to meet people that share your interest and to ask questions. You may join as many groups as you wish. The creator of a group sets the parameters for membership. If you have a question about a group, please write to the owner (the person who initiated the group). Executive Directors and members with similar responsibilities are urged to join a special forum group created by one of your colleagues just for you:http://gnhcommunity.ning.com/group/executivedirectorforum.

Open Streets Project Revamped

The Open Streets Project has undergone some changes over the last year. We bid a sad farewell to project co-founder, the Alliance for Biking & Walking, who are moving on to other things, and we happily welcomed a new partner, international Open Streets leader 8 80 Cities. Local Initiatives Support Corporation

PUSHing for Development Without Displacement in Buffalo

PUSH (People United for Sustainable Housing), a long-time LISC partner, has made extraordinary gains in disinvested parts of Buffalo by developing green affordable housing, workforce programs, community cohesion and even a land bank. An article in Next City plumbs the group’s mission and inventive strategies to boost prosperity for residents while trying to prevent displacement. Over the past decade, LISC has invested nearly $12 million in grants and equity in PUSH projects.

Underwriting Pay for Success Transactions

At the recent Opportunity Finance Network annual conference in D.C., LISC and partners hosted a panel that dove into the ins and outs of underwriting Pay For Success transactions. Borrowing strategies from traditional debt financing, the panelists walked the audience through the special considerations that can make for a successful Pay For Success deal.

LISC’s Julia Ryan in NY Times Letter: Community Efforts are Key to Crime Reduction

In response to a New York Times article on the role of citizens in crime reduction, Julia Ryan, LISC’s vice president of health and safety, wrote a letter to the editor underscoring the importance of community nonprofits and residents in the success of these efforts. Ryan points to LISC research that proves community-led strategies work and calls for appropriate investment in community-led revitalization.
