Nonprofit Board Composition

I often hear board members I'm working with say: we need to add a lawyer. And indeed, lawyers are popular additions to nonprofit boards but I'm not quite certain as to what exactly is expected with the addition of one. True, lawyers have a way of thinking, a process or discipline, that can be helpful to a board when fiduciary and sometimes strategic matters are up for discussion (which should be every meeting). True, lawyers know particular legal disciplines. For example, real estate lawyers…

Nonprofit Board Engagement Governance

Nonprofit community engagement governance "is a new framework in which governance responsibility is shared across the organizational system, distributing the work of governance among the key stakeholders of an organization: its constituents and community, staff and board. As 17 Year-old Is Buried--16-Year-old Is GUNNED DOWN!

The epidemic of gun violence, of Black on Black crimes in New Haven is, in fact, an accumulative massacre!  This is not too strong a statement.  Between Jan. 2009 and April 3, 2014, if someone had descended into various areas of the black New Haven community and gunned down 107 young  black people the rage could not be contained; and it would be justified.  This is exactly what has happened except the killers are from within the community!

On March 24,…

Nonprofit Board/CEO Communications Matters

Just how much communication and in what form should be conducted between the nonprofit CEO and the board and the chair of the board?

I think the answer to this question is predicated by the questions: how much does communication and what communication matters to the CEO and respectively, the board and board chair? I further think the answers to these questions is predicated on an understanding about what is meant by "partnership" - the popular description of what should be the…

All Invited to Requiem Mass for Martin Luther King, Jr, Sunday April 6, 2014

I have been wondering for some time what speech Martin Luther King , Jr. would have delivered during the Poor People's Campaign March conclusion which did take place by the way . We can only wonder how his Poor People's March speech would have compared to the Mountain Top speech. We of course will never know but the Requiem Mass being held on Sunday April 6, provides us all with an…

“Wounded Healers”: CVI Worker Wellness Takes Center Stage

LISC, with support from the Department of Justice, has been investing intensively in the work and wellbeing of frontline community violence intervention (CVI) workers. A new report on CVI practitioner trauma and strategies for their wellbeing, and a panel at a recent CVI conference, hammer home the urgency of informed, well-resourced support for these critical community servants.

LISC Receives $2M Grant from The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation to Renovate Sports Spaces for Youth in Under-Resourced Communities

With a new $2 million grant from The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, LISC opens a second application round for Game On-Community Places to Play, an initiative that funds the renovation of indoor and outdoor athletic spaces for young athletes, particularly in under-resourced communities. The deadline to apply for a grant is September 5, 2024.

The Farm Bill’s Potential for Supporting Rural People and Places

The Farm Bill presents an opportunity to provide rural communities and people the resources they need to flourish. LISC’s Mark Kudlowitz and Nicole Barcliff examine where things stand in Congress and how the legislation can support the needs of families while also revitalizing communities that have long experienced capacity constraints that hinder community and economic development opportunities.
