Event Description

This program aims to enrich teachers’ understanding of how visual art can provide a unique approach to enhancing literacy skills and offer opportunities for higher-level critical thinking. Lectures, discussions, and workshops by university faculty, museum curators, and educators will demonstrate the use of how “visual text” levels the playing field for students of all reading and writing skill levels and can be used to enhance language arts achievement in the classroom.
The institute will draw upon a very successful school partnership that has been using the Center as an extended classroom and will demonstrate how this collaboration is aligned with both national and state standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, and the Visual Arts. By demonstrating how works of art in the Center’s collections can be used to enhance methods for teaching the construction and interpretation of narrative forms, the institute will give participants the tools they need to make museum visits effective.

Class will run from 10 am to 3:30 pm with a working lunch each day. Participants will assess the impact of the institute on their teaching and students’ responses in an after-school evaluation session that will take place in the spring of 2011. Each teacher will attend all four days in June/July, as well as the follow-up session in the spring of 2011. ceus are earned for full participation in the institute. The program is free of charge. Lunch and parking will be provided.
bonus! If you attend the institute with a colleague or two from the same school, we will provide you with a teacher resource packet for your classrooms consisting of: art cards, posters, a bac-Pack of gallery activities, and a dvd of images from the Center’s collection.

Laying the Cash Tracks for Community Impact

LISC CFO Christina Travers is among the impact investing leaders who contributed commentaries to a new book, The Social Justice Investor, and joined a panel discussion at today’s book launch. In her essay, “Laying the Cash Tracks,” (reprinted here) she explains the evolution of LISC’s capital markets experience—noting how discouraging Wall Street conversations eventually led to transformative, community-focused investments.

Sharing the Story of Social Justice Investing

With the launch of the new book, The Social Justice Investor, LISC’s Christina Travers reflects on the ways that CDFIs have tapped the capital markets to deepen their impact—working to upend lingering misconceptions among some investors. "Whether we are financing affordable housing, small businesses, health, safety, climate resilience, racial equity or jobs, we see financial performance and local impact as part of the same whole."

EPA Awards GRID Alternatives Solar for All Grant

LISC partner GRID Alternatives has been awarded a $249,800,000 Solar for All grant from the EPA to advance renewable and clean energy sources for affordable housing communities across the country. “The grant is an incredible boon to the movement to decarbonize homes and lower energy costs that burden millions of everyday Americans,” said Michael T. Pugh, president and CEO of LISC.
