Organization Description

Junta for Progressive Action is non-profit organization committed to ensuring the economic, political and social conditions of the Latino and vulnerable community of greater New Haven, through programs and advocacy. Founded in 1969 to support the transition of Puerto Rican migrants into New Haven, we have emerged as an organization that focuses on supporting and empowering Latino, immigrant and low-income communities through service and social change. Through our Advocacy and Community Organizing program, we are emerging as a key partner in the national immigration reform movement, and affecting change within the state of Connecticut, and throughout greater New Haven.  The Director of Advocacy plays a key role within this movement.

 

Position Description

The Director of Advocacy’s principal responsibility is to develop and support Junta’s advocacy and public policy objectives as it relates to civil, human and immigrant rights Specific responsibilities include working with Junta’s constituency to promote expanded policies at the state and national levels, developing policy briefs on various topics related to social justice provide policy analysis and support to a growing statewide immigration coalition, planning convening of stakeholders, and monitoring activities and legislation at all government levels that are relevant to Junta’s mission.

 

Essential Duties:

• Work to develop an on-going public policy agenda and strategy.
• Educate constituents to advocate for the public policy agenda and work with constituents to identify, recruit and train stakeholders for grassroots advocacy.
• Track local, state and federal legislation and policy affecting immigrant communities and manage strategic communications for public policy to include legislative alerts, calls to action and issue briefs.
• Direct lobbying and legislative outreach
• Coordinate and serve as policy/legislative support for the Connecticut Immigrant Rights Alliance.
• Prepare periodic and annual summary reports of the public policy activity to the board and constituents.
• Liaison for Junta’s legal services partnerships, ensuring that the legal priorities reflect the needs of the community.
• Creates scope of and manages the Worker’s Justice Initiative.
• Garner visibility for Junta and immigration and human rights policy issues through presentations at conferences and meetings and work with the media.
• Develop and manage the Youth Action Committee.
• Attend scheduled meetings as appropriate and as requested.
• Contribute to grant proposals and reports to funders.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

• Recent Master’s Degree or JD preferred.
• Public policy and analytical experience.
• Knowledge of immigration and issues within vulnerable communities.
• Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to manage multiple competing responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
• Fully bilingual (English/Spanish).

Travel:   Director will be expected to travel regularly to attend meetings, conferences, legislative sessions etc.
