NEW HAVEN --- New Haven Academy Senior Jo’Anna Sutton is working with new education initiative, The Future Project, to turn her dreams into reality. She dreams of a world in which women are respected for every aspect of their womanhood. To create this world, Jo’Anna is hosting “We are W.O.M.E.N.”, a full-day conference raising awareness about sex trafficking and launching a movement to end it on March 9th at Dwight Hall at Yale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It will feature Love146, a survivor of sex trafficking, and several other social justice advocates from New York and Connecticut.

Her mission is to inform her community about the dangers of sex trafficking and how to prevent it from happening.  Sex Trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves an act of recruiting, transferring, harboring or receiving a person through the use of force in order to exploit them.  

Sex trafficking is modern day slavery an industry making $32 billion annually. The majority of people who are affected by these horrific crimes are young women, 13 years old and younger. After being sex trafficked, many young girls face a lifetime of trauma, shame, low self-esteem, depression, and isolation. Many are sex trafficked for their entire lives. This issue isn't just prevalent in other countries -- it happens here in the United States, in Connecticut and on our home turf.  No one should be treated this way.
