Heart disease is the main cause of death for American women. It is a group of diseases of the heart and the blood vessel system within the heart. Coronary heart disease, the most common form of heart disease, affects the blood vessels (or coronary arteries) of the heart. A heart attack can cause permanent damage to the heart and maybe even death. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911 or see your health care provider right away.
African American women are more likely to die from heart disease than other groups of women. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, not exercising, and smoking all put women at risk for heart disease. In addition, studies have shown that African Americans don't receive the same care for heart disease as Whites because they don't receive the same procedures and treatments.
