New Haven Reads, founded to “share the joy and power of reading,” increases the literacy skills of children to empower their academic success by providing individually tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank, all at no cost to participants.
Working in partnership with families and the community, New Haven Reads envisions a Greater New Haven in which every child has the opportunity to master reading and increase the odds of becoming a successful adult. Our volunteer-based one-on-one tutoring programs, our Book Bank, and our family support initiatives will serve as a national model for other communities.
Since New Haven Reads was founded in 2001, we have supported more than 3,500 students and distributed over 1.7 million books back into the community, thanks to the help of over 2,900 volunteers.
Today, the one-on-one tutoring program serves over 500 children every week at four New Haven locations, our Book Bank distributes approximately 120,000 free books annually, and our Pre-K/Kindergarten program serves 55 children every week. With our dedicated, professional staff and the commitment of over 400 volunteers, our free literacy programs support families in need and create skilled and confident readers.
New Haven Reads transforms the lives of children, their families, and the communities they live in due to the incredible power of literacy.

When you join GNH Community you automatically have a blog on the site. You can use this blog to share your thoughts and opinions, perhaps even something you wrote for another occasion that you would like to share with a broader audience. You may also share articles or other non-date specific information, resources or job announcements on your blog page. Using tags facilitates finding post by using these keywords in the search box. You can promote your organization's blog or a blog about your field of expertise using GNH Community just post your blog entry title and a teaser paragraph with a link back to the complete post on your blog. Blog post are shared every Wednesday.
Video and Picture Sharing
You can post videos and pictures on GNH Community. Videos are increasingly becoming the medium of choice for nonprofits. You can post promotional videos about your organization, educational videos about your field and public service announcements. Every Tuesday we feature a video at the top of the GNH Community homepage and share it with our social media network. Check out the videos that have already been posted for ideas and inspiration, create a video, post it on You Tube or Vimeo and share it through a link on the video page. If you give us a couple of weeks of notice we can try to time the featuring of your video with a particular event or an awareness campaign. The best way to use the pictures function is to create an album. An album can be used to tell a story, to document impact or to show progress. We will gladly feature an album if you give us notice of its creation.
You can join groups created by members or create your own; this is a great place to meet people that share your interest and to ask questions. You may join as many groups as you wish. The creator of a group sets the parameters for membership.
