HIV is 24th Leading Cause of Death for Whites - 9th Leading Cause of Death for Blacks
HIV Death Rates Fall, But Disparities Remain: Study

New drug treatments have dramatically improved survival for people infected with HIV, but a new study finds that African Americans and less educated Americans have not seen the same gains as others, suggesting differences in access to available treatments.
"There have been substantial declines in HIV death rates, but not everyone has benefited equally from the drugs that have been available since 1996," said Edgar Simard, the study's lead author and a senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta.
The drugs currently used against HIV are collectively known as highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART. They help suppress the virus in a person's blood, which helps the immune system stay strong and may delay the onset of AIDS.
But, the authors note in the Archives of Internal Medicine, while HIV fell to 24th leading cause of death for whites, it rose to be the ninth leading cause of death for blacks.

Bloomberg Spotlights MacKenzie Scott's $65 Million Donation to LISC
An article in Bloomberg highlights MacKenzie Scott’s recent unrestricted grant-making to nonprofits, including a $65 million gift to LISC. Unrestricted gifts like this, in addition to Scott’s 2020 donation of $40 million, allow LISC to build upon its work with a more flexible and innovative approach. MacKenzie Scott, the prolific philanthropist, announced that she is donating $65 million to LISC, the largest contribution in our organization’s 45-year history. This is Scott’s second grant to LISC, which builds on a $40 million gift in 2020 that was used to seed programs that narrow gaps in health, wealth and opportunity, particularly for communities of color.Lowe’s Launches $2.5 Million Western North Carolina Small Business Recovery Fund
LISC is teaming up with Lowe’s to help small businesses in Western North Carolina recover from the impacts of Hurricane Helene. We will make $20,000 grants to 100 small businesses to address urgent needs and jumpstart recovery. Small businesses in disaster-declared communities may apply for grants from Nov. 18 to Nov. 22.
