Last week Gwen Samuel, the engine behind the newly formed CT Parent Union, joined me at North Haven Television for a OneWorld Education Agenda program: It was a candid discussion about the need for a parent union in CT. You can read all about it in the New Haven Independent, linked below. Also joining me were: Tim Holahan, a New Haven resident and father of a child he expects to be in kindergarten this year, if he can get his child into one of the NH Pre-K Magnet School programs, and Michelle Morgan, an East Haven parent who sends her two children to school in New Haven. Ms. Morgan and Mr. Holahan are very involved parents and parent advocates who believe that the overall management practices of the NHPS system need to be more transparent. Both parents belong to a parent support group in New Haven. Ms. Morgan is working to help parents of young children to navigate the NHPS system more easily. She has created an informative web site that helps parents with all of the nuts and bolts of getting their young children registered in NHPS. The site is linked below as: A Parent Guide to Preschool in New Haven.
Another guest on the program was Milly Arciniegas. She is a longtime leader in Hartford’s parent teacher organization; she is starting a “university” modeled on the one in Boston in order to help Hartford parents navigate the educational system. Milly, Gwen, Tim and Michelle are 100 percent committed to greatly increasing parent participation in every level of education as well as in school governance. We at OneWorld believe that parental involvement is largely responsible for students' success in education. These parents want positive collaboration with teachers and with the school system; they are trying to help other parents to become more skilled in being good advocates for their children; we applaud their efforts and encourage other parents to participate.
