I would like to invite nonprofits from Greater New Haven to participate in Coding for Social Good with the CT Girls Scouts. The program is on Saturday, March 25 at Quinnipiac University. The event provides girls, in grades 4-8, the opportunity to team up as problem solvers and innovators to develop Smartphone app prototypes to benefit local nonprofit organizations – especially ones that interest student in that age range.
What would be your role? You or a member of your organization would partner with a group of 3-4 students and a technology mentor by first introducing your organization and its work, and then brainstorming with the students the type of Smartphone app that might help you in your efforts. (Perhaps you need a better connection to the public, or a way to communicate necessary information to your members.)
The girls and their mentor would then go on to create the prototype for that app. At the end of the day the teams will present their innovations. Since all the organizations serve the community differently and have different needs, the apps should be varied and captivating.
What is the time commitment? The event runs from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. A representative from your organization needs to be present at the beginning of the event to brainstorm with the students and mentors. And if possible at the end of the event to see the finished project and to help the students with their final presentation.
What is the benefit to you and the students? You will have the opportunity to educate the community about what you do, as well as distribute material during the event. The students will explore the power of computing and experience how technology can be used for social good.
I hope you will join us. If you are interested in registering as one of our participating nonprofits, please contact me at reesegans@gmail.com
Regards,
Patrice
