For two decades, Tonier “Neen” Cain hustled on the streets, racking up 66 convictions along the way. In 2004, pregnant and incarcerated, Ms. Cain was given an opportunity to go to a community trauma, mental health and addictions program. There, somebody asked her: what happened to you?
For the first time Ms. Cain confronted haunting childhood memories. Learning she had been a victim, she began to heal, to reclaim power over her life, and thus embarked on a remarkable journey.
Today, Tonier Cain works for the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care, dedicating her life to illustrating the consequences of untreated trauma and empowering those still lost and silent.
