November is Diabetes Awareness Month – Diabetes Is More Than A Little Sugar
When It Comes to Diabetes Inches and Pounds Do Matter Greatly. As we focus more acutely on the health and well-being of our citizens, we at OneWorld encourage diabetics and their loved ones to learn all that you can about this debilitating disease and entreat you to take proactive steps to reduce its effects on vital body systems.
Even if diabetes runs in the family, we can reduce the ravages of this debilitating disease with a few proactive steps. Walking 30 mins daily (as briskly as we can go) has several benefits, among them:
1) Improves cardiovascular / heart health; it strengthens the legs and improves muscle tone.
2) Walking helps to reduce the risk of obesity; this improves the body mass index (BMI); this lowers the risk of developing diabetes, and keeps us more trim and healthy overall.
3) If you are a diabetic, walking leads to more effective use of glucose by the muscle cells; this helps to use insulin more effectively and improve blood sugar levels.
4) Walking lowers blood pressure; this protects against kidney failure, heart attack and stroke
A diabetic educator and people with diabetes explain types of diabetes and how to effectively manage diabetes with diet, exercise and medication. Watch the short OneWorld video to become better informed. Please share the link and this information with others. Good health is our most important asset.
