I am delighted to read this story. Thank you for writing it. The importance of education (as in the ability to think critically, to be civically engaged, to understand how our legal system functions, or doesn't) and our role and responsibilities as citizens are made real for our students in this type of activity. This demonstrates to our children that a comprehensive education is not only about literacy (the ability to read, write and comprehend). Making education a living, functioning objective for all children is a worthy and practical goal for which our education system should strive harder.
What is demonstrated in this story cannot be measured by any standardized tests. While being able to master the CMT and CAPT is critically important to gain entrance into institutions of higher learning, our students need more of this type of education to become truly literate and enlightened as citizens. Congratulations to the staff at John C. Daniels School and to all those who worked to make this project a reality. The smile on the face of Dolores Brown, Defense Attorney Slick, says it all.
