OneWorld Celebrates Black Musical Giants Who Have Left Us During Black History Month
Since Black History Month February 2013, began we have lost a few of our artistic giants. We lost Donald Byrd, the brilliant Jazz innovator died on Feb. 4, 2013; he was 80 years old. It saddens me that there were no official commemorations of his phenomenal artistic contributions. Byrd was a devoted educator and master jazz trumpeter in the league of Coltrane, Monk and Roach.

We also lost James DePriest – Musical Conductor. He died on Feb 8, at the age of 76. DePriest was one of very few Blacks to lead major orchestras; he was also the nephew of trailblazer and African-American contralto singer, Marian Anderson. DePriest conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, and was the music director of the Oregon Symphony. Because of a physical handicap he often conducted from a wheelchair.
