YANA—the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance—is a new group whose goals include finding jobs, sharing resources, and expanding opportunities among the Yale community involved in or seeking to become involved in the nonprofit world. The group’s objective is to mobilize and unify the resources of our alumni network to better serve the needs and objectives of nonprofits. We want to help expose current students and recent grads to networking and career opportunities relating to the nonprofit sector. YANA hopes to make nonprofit career opportunities more visible and accessible.

One of the initial steps YANA would like to take toward this goal is locating opportunities in New York and New Haven for students to “shadow” individuals working in the nonprofit sector during this year’s spring break (weeks of March 5 and March 12).

The placement can be for some or all of this time period. The “shadowing” could involve a mix of observation and assistance, and need not be directly with the Executive Director. A mix of program and administrative exposure is ideal, but there is considerable flexibility. The best fit will be where a young, energetic person can learn from you and your colleagues and, at the same time, help your organization in some way. Opportunities are especially sought in the areas of public health, education, the environment and economic development.

If you are interested in hosting a Yale “shadow” Intern in March, please contact Joseph DeNicola (Yale ‘86; FES’96; Solar Youth Board Chair) Joseph.Denicola@ge.com by February 10.

We are once again creating an opportunity to spread the word about how fabulous and important New Haven’s nonprofits are at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas. See the details below. There are 2 ways your organization can be involved.

Make a 2 foot by 2 foot display about your organization to be hung in the tent.

Volunteer for a shift at the tent – educating people about the impact of nonprofits to our community (talking points will be provided).

NOTE: Space for displays is limited, so preference will be given for organizations who also sign up to volunteer at the Tent.

PS: Please forward, and we apologize for multiple postings, but this is time sensitive.

"I Love Greater New Haven Nonprofits" campaign @ Arts & Ideas Weekend Showcase

WHAT

The International Festival will provide a tent on the New Haven Green that will contain 2' x 2' displays created by New Haven area nonprofits showcasing their work. This tent emulates the “I Love Greater New Haven Nonprofits” Storefront, which took place at the Grove during the 2010 Holidays. In the tent, visitors will learn about the great diversity of impact by nonprofits, share how nonprofits have impacted their lives, and also connect to giving and volunteering opportunities via a laptop connected to GNH Community website.

WHY

1. To increase public awareness of the many nonprofit organizations in Greater New Haven.
2. To increase awareness and appreciation of the many ways in which nonprofits contribute to the well-being of the community. Most people are aware that nonprofits provide a lot of intangibles: enhancing the quality of life for its citizens through arts, cultural and educational institutions. They are also aware that nonprofits care for those in need -- through hospitals and human services organizations. However, far fewer people consider the many ways in which nonprofits contribute to the economic vitality of the communities in which they have a presence: as employers, and purchasers of services, whose employees purchase homes, cars, food, clothing, etc.

3. To provide an opportunity for community members to access the services provided by area nonprofit organizations, through area websites that access services, volunteer opportunities, employment and philanthropy.

Who Is Putting This Together?

The Tent is a collaboration between The I love Greater New Haven Nonprofits Campaign, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, and you.

Now in its second year, this initiative will be promoted during the International Festival of Arts & Ideas when representatives from New Haven's nonprofits will get the word out about the value of nonprofit to our community through distribution of "impact fact cards" and other fun activities. If you participated last year, your "impact fact card" will be used again.

To add your organization to the fact cards distributed at this year's Festival (only if you did NOT participate last year, because we are still using those cards) go to this link:

Visit 2009 GNHNP Impact Cards to see last year's impact cards here

You do not need to attend the Box City or concerts to participate, but we ask each organization provide at least two volunteers over the course of each weekend to help with the campaign. Deadline for submission of your organization's fact card is 5pm on Friday, May 21.

Here's How it Works:

Representatives from area nonprofits will dispense "I Love Greater New Haven Non-Profits" stickers as well as "Impact Fact Trading Cards" during two weekends of the Arts & Ideas Festival.

Saturday, June 12 and Sunday, June 13 from 12:00 - 5:00pm: "Box City," 900 Chapel Street, New Haven.

Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 from 5:00 - 7:00pm: during concerts on the Green.

Volunteers will encourage people to trade cards and complete a crossword puzzle educating them about the great diversity of work and impact of Greater New Haven nonprofits. There will be prizes to encourage people to complete the crossword puzzle.

Our hope is that the stickers, cards, and crossword puzzle will inspire people to talk about the incredible value and importance of nonprofit organizations to the New Haven community, creating a collective "buzz" that will build support for all of our work.
Sitting in Junta, at the GNH Community workshop, imaging what the possibilities of this site could be. The first thing is to get people on board, and then learn how to use it efficiently. I am currently on a few listservs related to non-profits in New Haven and can imagine them working through this site. These include CityWide Youth Coalition, Executive Director breakfast group, the Chamber's Non Profit Resource Council, the I <3 New Haven Non-Profits, etc. Hmmm.
