Dear Friends,

Well, the baseball season is underway like it has been since C1850's. It was coined as the "national pastime" or the "national game." There were baseball players from all over the States. Since 1895 until approx. 1910 there were board games and we find "trading cards" to be found in cigarettes packs. The first fully professional baseball club formed was in 1869 - "The Cincinnati Red Stockings:. A quick history.....

In Grove Street, we have a wonderful memorial stone given to the cemetery by the Cofrancesco family to honor Mr. Miller his music and his giving to the US Military Troupes during World War II. However, you ask and what does baseball have to do with that monumental musician from the 20th century. Well - I am attaching a file about a great story about Glenn, baseball and New Haven.

Please enjoy the story and then come for a visit to the cemetery to enjoy our summer garden.

Well, this is the "season of the witch" as the song goes.....but I am writing to give a brief notation on Ghost Stories from the Victorian Age.

Actually, Charles Dickens, (who visited New Haven several times) was the master of the ghost story. From his own periodical paper "Household Words" taken from Shakespeare's Henry V "Familiar in his mouth as household words." he developed the interest in ghost stories. As a matter of interest, ghost stories were told at Christmas time, not at Halloween. And this type of story telling had a huge presence in the English home and a very powerful influence and effect upon reading and the interest for reading in Victorian England.

What is interesting to note is women loved to read and write about ghost stores. These various tales brought excitement into their dull lives. The stories were full of detail into another woman's home and her influence upon her family through the tragedy of the tale.

Where we see an explosion of this genre in 1860. One so noted female writer was Mary Elizabeth Braddon and her tale entitled "Eveline's Visitant" published in the Belgravia from 1866 to 1867. Other famous women writer from this era are: Amelia Edwards, Mrs. Riddel, Rhoda Broughton dating from 1860 through the 1870's to name a few.

And ghost stories have vigorously continued on through the 19th century with great zeal and so continues today with as much, or even more zeal for the macabre for some.

Well, Happy Halloween to All!!!!!!

In June, we celebrate Father's Day. It has always been a time honored celebration. Grove Street Cemetery holds our 1st Mayor of New Haven Roger Sherman - a Founding Father, if you will.

Maybe this would seem trite but we can honor this special Founding Father. He was the only Founding Father to sign all four documents setting up the United States of America - The Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, The Constitution of the United States, and The Articles of Confederation. Sherman was a self-made man who was by trade a cobbler and forged his own way into an honored life. Thomas Jefferson, said of him, "He never said a stupid thing in his life." And his original home is on Chapel Street where the Union League is now in residence.

So if you feel like it - come see the wonderful monument of our Founding "Father" - Roger Sherman.

But now I would like to endorse another walk - The Connecticut Autism Walk. It is a wonderful walk to assist in the curing of this disease. This year the walk will be on May 3rd (rain or shine) at the Choate Rosemary Hall Athletic Field in Wallingford, CT beginning at 9:30am. This walk is 2.5 miles through the lovely historic area of Wallingford, CT.

It is a real hoot!!!! There will be raffles, flowers for sale, food trucks, contests, music and just a lot of fun for all.

If you need more information, then these truly remarkable persons who have been totally involved with this great project are George and Lisa Carranzo, owners of Grand Apizza at 111 Grand Ave, Fair Haven - 203-624-7646. Or the website is www.ctautismwalk.com.

Usually I like to write about the various persons connected within the cemetery and the walk-about with those persons. But for this note today, I would like to discuss the Walk for Autism which took place in Wallingford two weeks ago.

Needless, to say, it was a wonderful time to give to a great cause. My team was the "Marissa Monsters". Marissa is the daughter of Lisa and George Carranzo, the owners of Grand Apizza (New Haven's Best Kept Secret) located at 111 Grand Avenue, New Haven, 203.624.7646.

The walk is hosted at Rosemary-Choate School and then from this point of central position we walked through the historic part of the city of Wallingford. There was a Dixie Jazz Band and other amusements - like walking on bubblewrap, etc. The day was awesome with the best weather ever and the people were just as great.

So I encourage anyone to commit to this occasion once a year - it is for such a great cause. This past year the group raised around $2500.00 to develop a cure.

If interested call Lisa or George at 203.624.7646 and they will assist in any questions, or concerns you may have with the Walk.

Cheers to All,

Just a quick note about Grove Street Cemetery in the Spring.....it is beginning to burgeon with fragrant trees and with the planting of flowers in various areas. There is wisteria at certain graves and trees blossoming across the cemetery. It has been a wonder through the efforts of Bill and Joan Cameron with his family with the hard-working ground-keeping staff.

It is very has well-kept for over 40 years and it is to the Cameron we owe a big tribute and thank you for them keeping the cemetery lush and beautiful. The first ground-keep was Gerald Snow - I go to visit him on occasion. It was through his efforts the cemetery had a wonderful record-keeping system without use of technology....surprising Mr. Snow was ahead of his time in record keeping.

Please come visit even with April showers....it is beautiful!!!!

The month of March can be a time of mischievous weather. It is a month where we are witnessing the last of the winter season and then the first signs of spring. Where there are great winds at times and then soft spring breezes coming about in this month. But this is the month of the Irish celebration of St. Patrick's Day and so within the cemetery there are Celtic Crosses for viewing.

In Victorian times and carrying-on into the Gilded Age, March offered maple-sugaring parties, then St. Patrick's Day Celebrations, with fairy wayside jaunts of finding new flowerings, or children planting their own special gardens, with the making of pussy willow wreaths and finally the making of Easter baskets. There were scents from the kitchens of Irish families of Colcannon and the savoring flavor of Irish Soda bread. Still by the fireside on March evenings, the literature of the Gilded Age was of Peter Pan and Wendy by Sir James M Barrie (1911), or we might be reading this book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1911).

But getting on with Grove Street Cemetery, not just in March but all year, the cemetery hosts monumental structures of Celtic Crosses. The Celtic Cross is a very distinct piece of funerary art. The Cross is considered a most effervescent of all crosses to be found anywhere. They are embellished with lovely and intricate tracery and froth with ancient symbolism of the Celt people. The basic form of the Celtic cross is a cross form enclosed with a nimbus (circle). The cross has its origins as far back as 10,000 years ago with the Pagan funeral rites. As the cross became Christian, it lost the symbolism of the Goddess rites but was still strongly tied to the Mother Earth and very much part of national pride. Just as a brief description of the cross, the four arms correspond to the four elements of Earth - Wind - Fire - Water. Yet in some areas the Celtic cross takes the four arms representing the fours provinces of Ireland and the nimbus creates a fifth province by incorporating all the other four provinces.

Just as a point of interest - in a churchyard of Coniston, Cumbria, England, there stands the memorial cross of the famous author John Ruskin (1819-1900). What makes this cross unique it there is no nimbus but the cross has the life of Ruskin chiseled into the cross on all four sides using only symbols. It is breath-taking to be assured.

However, please come to walk about to witness our lovely crosses. If there is an interest to have a guided tour as such, please call me at 203.389.5403, or email any time p.b.i.newhaven@att.net.

The month of February is upon us at Grove Street and I thought I would recount a special story about our distinguished resident Dalia Bacon –From Wikipeadia the following is a brief recounting of her life and a small note for her remembrance on this Valentines’ Day -

Delia Salter Bacon (February 2, 1811 – September 2, 1859) was an American writer of plays and short stories and a sister of the Congregational minister Leonard Bacon. She is best known today for her work on the Shakespeare authorship question.

She promoted the theory that the plays attributed to William Shakespeare were written by a group of men, including Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh and others.

She was befriended by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and, after securing sponsorship to travel for research to England, in May 1853, met with Thomas Carlyle, who though intrigued, shrieked loudly as he heard her exposition.[4]

Puzzled by the gap between the bare facts of William Shakespeare's life and his vast literary output, she intended to prove that the plays attributed to Shakespeare were written by a coterie of men, including Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh and Edmund Spenser, for the purpose of inculcating a philosophic system, for which they felt that they themselves could not afford to assume the responsibility. This system she set out to discover beneath the superficial text of the plays. From her friendship with Samuel Morse, an authority on codes, and encryption for the telegraph, she learnt of Bacon's interest in secret ciphers, and this prompted her own approach to the authorship question.[8]

By way of this modern era, Dalia is witnessed in the following book published in 2008 by -

Jennifer Lee Carrell, Interred in their Bones – has been reviewed on Amazon Books, to wit:

“Jennifer Lee Carrell’s highly acclaimed debut novel is a brilliant, breathlessly paced literary adventure. The action begins on the eve of the Globe’s production of Hamlet when Shakespeare scholar and theater director Kate Stanley’s eccentric mentor Rosalind Howard gives her a mysterious box, claiming to have made a groundbreaking discovery. Before she can reveal it to Kate, the Globe is burned to the ground and Roz is found dead…murdered precisely in the manner of Hamlet’s father.

Inside the box Kate finds the first piece in a Shakespearean puzzle, setting her on a deadly, high stakes treasure hunt. From London to Harvard to the American West, Kate races to evade a killer and solve a tantalizing string of clues hidden in the words of Shakespeare, which may unlock one of history’s greatest secrets.”

This book by Carrell contains many of the theories and notions annunciated by Bacon and as she was admired by Emerson, Whitman, and Hawthorne. Dalia still lives on with her magnus opus which was approx. 1,000 pages of intense study and development leading into madness by her theories on Shakespeare and one very broken heart.

To make mention – Dalia fell in love while developing her hypotheses but was rebuked by her lover and she fell into a deep remorse and heartache never to recover. What is interesting to note – there is always a rose at her grave…..She is interred in front her brother Leonard Bacon at 52 Cedar Avenue.
