Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director
Ralph Vaughan Williams composed English Folk Song Suite for British military band in 1924. This three-movement piece is based entirely on folk songs and reflects the composer’s lifelong interest in and research on English folk songs.
Aegean Festival Overture reflects the Greek origin of its composer, Andreas Makris. With its opening driving energy and subsequent lyric plaintiveness, this piece epitomizes Makris’ musical style – a blend of classical form and Greek folkloristic elements.
The title Hymn for World Peace came from composer David Maslanka’s simple idea that if we want world peace, we can begin as individuals to ask for it. This gorgeous work was premiered in May 2015.
Joaquin Rodrigo’s Adagio for Wind Orchestra creates a Spanish ambiance – evocative harmonies and fanciful tunes instill in listeners the flair and melancholy inherent in Spanish folk music.
Resonances I is a “surround” piece in which composer Ron Nelson positions the trumpets and trombones around the hall or in the balcony, with the remaining performers onstage, resulting in the audience’s complete immersion in the varying textures of the piece.
