Event Description

Wallingford Public Library, 200 North Main Street, Wallingford, presents actor George Baker in his role as President John Adams for the program “My Wife Abigail Adams, America’s First Modern Woman, Thursday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m.

Abigail Adams—outspoken First Lady, and mother of the sixth American president, John Quincy Adams, was a savvy business woman. She possessed nontraditional financial acumen, tenacity, and the ability to create wealth during a time when women were not even allowed to own property. As portrayed by Baker, and with affection, humor, and admiration, President John Adams will reveal how the ever-audacious Abigail defied both law and the sexist conventions of her time to make her family prosperous.

Baker will appear in the style of 18th-century clothing worn by President John Adams, and will perform several period or patriotic songs during his presentation: “God Save the King,” “Yankee Doodle,” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and “America, I Gave My Best to You. ”

Since 2008, George Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country at national conventions and venues including Mystic Seaport, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas, the Senator Robert Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University, the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas, and the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Missouri, and was featured as John Adams on National Public Radio’s weekend program, Studio 360. He is a graduate of Columbia University and Columbia Law School and is a practicing attorney in Connecticut.

The library encourages the public to attend this free, entertaining, patriotic-inspired presentation. Advance registration is appreciated. For more information, please contact the library at 203-265-6754 or online at www.wallingfordlibrary.org.

Laying the Cash Tracks for Community Impact

LISC CFO Christina Travers is among the impact investing leaders who contributed commentaries to a new book, The Social Justice Investor, and joined a panel discussion at today’s book launch. In her essay, “Laying the Cash Tracks,” (reprinted here) she explains the evolution of LISC’s capital markets experience—noting how discouraging Wall Street conversations eventually led to transformative, community-focused investments.

Sharing the Story of Social Justice Investing

With the launch of the new book, The Social Justice Investor, LISC’s Christina Travers reflects on the ways that CDFIs have tapped the capital markets to deepen their impact—working to upend lingering misconceptions among some investors. "Whether we are financing affordable housing, small businesses, health, safety, climate resilience, racial equity or jobs, we see financial performance and local impact as part of the same whole."

EPA Awards GRID Alternatives Solar for All Grant

LISC partner GRID Alternatives has been awarded a $249,800,000 Solar for All grant from the EPA to advance renewable and clean energy sources for affordable housing communities across the country. “The grant is an incredible boon to the movement to decarbonize homes and lower energy costs that burden millions of everyday Americans,” said Michael T. Pugh, president and CEO of LISC.
