Matthew Desmond is the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences and co-director of the Justice and Poverty Project at Harvard University. Through the Instituto del Progreso Latino, which he has led since 2001, Juan Salgado works with members of the low-income, Latino immigrant communities on Chicago’s southwest side. Most adults in these communities face formidable barriers to upward mobility. Instituto del Progreso Latino is a recognized leader in education, workforce, and citizenship, serving 10,000 people annually.

Beverly Gage, Yale Professor of History, will moderate. Professor Gage is a regular contributor to The New York Times, Washington Post, and PBS News Hour.

This discussion will raise awareness of issues affecting urban centers across Connecticut, a state where the cost of living is high, quality housing stock is limited, and even families whose heads of household are employed are at risk of homelessness.
