The Arts Council of Greater New Haven, in collaboration with curator Katro Storm, is presenting “A Tribute to Langston Hughes” in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery at 70 Audubon St., 2nd Floor in New Haven. The exhibition and special performance will celebrate Black History Month 2013.
The show will be on view from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, February 8th to April 5th, 2013. An artists’ reception will take place on Friday, February 22nd from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception will include a special performance at 6 p.m.
“A Tribute to Langston Hughes” will feature the performing artist “Ade” Anthony Thompson, visual artist Renaldo Davidson, and video artist NJ Martin. The exhibition pays tribute to Langston Hughes; poet, novelist, playwright, and leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s.
As Storm describes it, the show will be layered and include collaborations because Hughes liked to work collaboratively. The best time to see all of the layers is at the reception on February 22nd. There, Thompson will be performing as Jesse B. Simple, one of Hughes most memorable characters. Davidson’s visual art, inspired by Hughes’ poems and Thompson’s characterization of Jesse B. Simple, will be hanging on the gallery walls, and NJ Martin will be showing video work he has made to pay tribute to Hughes.
