Deputy Director for Development and Programs

Junta for Progressive Action seeks a Deputy Director. The purpose of this role is to support the executive director in the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plans and policies, and to provide leadership and direction to Junta and other staff. Reporting to the executive director (ED), the Deputy Director will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from client and project management (business and fundraising development, framing of key approaches, high-quality client delivery,) to administration (information technology, reporting, facilities), and human capital (HR/recruiting, mentoring, career progression). The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED to chart Junta’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services and programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full delegated authority to act on behalf of the Executive Director in her absence;
  • Responsible for the development and execution of the organization’s strategy and sustainability;
  • Fully responsible for Fundraising strategy and execution, donor management, business development and partnership activities;
  • Provides leadership and direction for staff, setting an effective agenda and ensuring performance goals are met and set;
  • Serves as a mentor, coach and guide to senior staff,
  • Represents the organization to the public, key stakeholders and business partners;
  • Provides guidance for program activities including outreach, volunteer coordination and partnerships development, as well as marketing, media relations, public relations and management activities;

Development, Fundraising and Grants

  1. Leads a comprehensive fundraising program, including the creation of a short and long term development plan; development and implementation of a comprehensive major donor program; 
  2. Identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors, including individuals, corporations and foundations; maintenance of donor records, donor files and development database.
  3. Maintain relationships with donors, foundation contacts, public organizations, volunteers and other supporters of the Center.
  4.  Maintenance and growth of government and private grant programs; Research and proposal writing, grant reporting and management.
  5. Coordination of Junta’s annual special events and developing new events.
  6. Maintain communications materials and agency messaging through creating and maintenance of website, brochures, quarterly newsletter and development of additional materials.
  7. Develop new business and income opportunities that will ensure the long-range financial stability of the organization.
  8. Work with Executive Director to develop the annual agency and program budgets and financial reports.

Programs

  1. Assist Executive Director in the overall management of Junta, including development of Junta’s goals and objectives.
  2. Ensure effective program management for Junta’s seven major programs, including assessment and making recommendations for refinement and/or expansion.
  3. Lead the development of strategic work-plans for programs with clear objectives and achievement benchmarks, long-term and short-term priorities, implementation plans, financial projections and tools for evaluation.
  4. Design and develop programs that promote beneficiary participation, capacity building, partnership, advocacy and protection and promotion of rights;
  5. Ensure the development of new program opportunities are in line with Junta’s mission and vision
  6. Assist Executive Director with supervision and mentoring of staff.

Qualifications

  • College degree and at least 3 years’ experience in relevant field;
  • Experience in cultivating relationships with a variety of audiences including foundations, government agencies, donors, organizations, clients and media.
  •  Experience in creating and maintaining budgets;
  • Excellent research, writing and editing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills;
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and handle multiple tasks;
  • Ability to work independently and in a fast paced, team environment;
  • Commitment to the mission, values and goals of Junta.

JUNTA for Progressive Action (“JUNTA”) is New Haven’s oldest Latino community based organization. Its mission is to provide services, programs and advocacy that improve the social, political and economic conditions of the Latino community in Greater New Haven, while nurturing and promoting its cultural traditions as it builds bridges with other communities.  For the past thirty-seven years, JUNTA has been an advocate and direct provider of programs and services to New Haven’s Latino immigrant population and low to moderate income residents of New Haven. JUNTA offers programs in the area of Adult Education, Children’s Afterschool and Summer Programs, Cultural Awareness, Economic Development, Family Management, Immigrant Rights and Legal Advocacy.
