Nonprofit Board Fiduciary Duty of Care

The following Wall Street Journal article is about a lot of topics in the nonprofit governance world. I thought framing my own thoughts around a nonprofit board's fiduciary duty of care to be one area of focus but beyond this subject is a rarely displayed "what can happen" when there's a new chair "in town" and when there are questions of competency (re paid staff) and transparency (financial and program) and the board's own fulfillment of its duty to provide complete oversight. Certainly…

Regulators Need to Scrutinize Health Insurance Mergers

Regulators Need to Scrutinize Health Insurance Mergers; so wrote the New York Times Editorial Board. this point cannot be overstated.

It's also important that Consumers and Advocacy Groups pay close attention!

Health Insurance companies are trying to circumvent the ACA and price gouge consumers.  Two proposed mergers will reduce competition, raise premiums and shut many…

Nonprofit Governance and the Law

In one of those "render under Caesar" (check your New Testament for greater understanding) and what appears to be a NIMBY challenge, the Tampa officials are basically on-attack of a homeless shelter that by many standards, appears to be doing its job--providing shelter to the homeless of Tampa. But it's clear from the Tampa Tribune article, that not everyone is pleased with the job the Shelter is doing and for the moment, using the courts and law enforcement to solve their perception of the…

Nonprofit Sustainability Strategies

For a growing nonprofit with a small board, those interested summer students are a crucial revenue stream. And getting the Academy’s studios ready by the first day of the program was imperative.

“We don’t have board members donating $100,000,” said board chair Andre Tchelistcheff, an architect who led the renovation. “The school is financially viable.”

These three sentences in a Wall Street Journal article on the Gelsey Kirlkland Academy's new space and future highlights that…

“Giving More of Our Neighbors Access to the Opportunities Homeownership Affords”: Q+A with Umpqua Bank’s Randy Choy

LISC is working with Umpqua Bank to tackle the systemic roadblocks that prevent many communities of color and rural residents from buying a home. In a Q+A with Umpqua Bank’s Randy Choy, we learn why expanding fair access to quality homeownership opportunities is so important to the bank, and to Choy.

How the LIFT Act Can Make Homeownership, and Strong Communities, a Reality for More Americans

In an op-ed for The Virginian-Pilot, LISC Virginia executive director Jane Ferrara lays out the ways the proposed LIFT Act could make homeownership, at 20-year, fixed rate mortgages, accessible to first-time, first-generation buyers—the very people who are often edged out of the American Dream. The legislation, in partnership with home-buying programs like the ones LISC leads, Ferrara writes, can help "bridge the racial wealth gap as well as the gap between dreams and reality for the next generation of aspiring homeowners."

The Difference a Ride Can Make

An article in QCity Metro describes the life-changing impact of LISC and Uber's partnership, the Health Access Fund, offering free rides to medical and other appointments that contribute to health and wellbeing. In Charlotte, NC, as in other cities where the Fund operates, rides are coordinated through locally rooted groups like Care Ring, a 70-year-old community organization that since March has been able to offer 2,600 rides to primary and specialist care appointments, food access points, case management meetings and much more.
