Recruiting VITA Volunteers!

Once again this year, CAHS is helping to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites we work with in Fairfield, New Haven, and Litchfield Counties by recruiting and coordinating the volunteers who keep this program running.  We have launched a new volunteer registration website this year, Volunteer Hub, where volunteers can register to volunteer in their area and sign up for tax trainings with the IRS.

Attention Nonprofits & Small Biz. - Company Donating, Selling Old TV Show Props

New York´s Film Biz Recycling is putting unwanted props leftover from the entertainment industry to good use.

The company takes in items once used on TV shows such as Law and Order or movies and gives them to nonprofit groups, according to the New York Daily News.

 

Some things also are donated to small businesses and the rest is sold through Film Biz´s thrift store, the paper reported.

IRIS looking for help to plan the Run for Refugees

IRIS will host the 5th Annual Run for Refugees- a fund-raising 5K run/walk up East Rock- on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012.  We are looking for volunteers to help plan the event!

LISC CEO Maurice A. Jones joined a panel of researchers and other experts brought together by the Philadelphia Fed to discuss how government at all levels can help small businesses recover from the pandemic, and how these programs must evolve to ensure equitable recovery. The webinar is part of an ongoing series examining best practices for bringing about equity as we emerge from the crisis.

In an op-ed for Philadelphia's NPR affiliate, Andy Frishkoff, ED of LISC Philly, and Nilda Ruiz, a longtime LISC board member and director of Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha, explain how community engagement, combined with intensive investment from federal, state and local entities, can successfully address the affordable housing gap. Building the Skills & Confidence to Land a Good Job: One Woman's Journey

Volunteers of America Texas (VOATX) in Houston is one of more than 40 community-based partners nationwide using LISC’s Bridges to Career Opportunities model. LaSonya Bishop, VOATX’s Regional Director of Workforce, explores what it takes to help unemployed and underemployed people build their skills and find good-paying jobs – a task that is more challenging than ever with the pandemic. She does so through the lens of a Houston resident named Tamara, who overcame addiction and homelessness to graduate from a VOATX training program and get a job as a phlebotomist, which she has maintained since Covid-19 hit our shores. This is just one of many success stories catalyzed by LISC’s partnership with the Citi Foundation.
