In Connecticut and throughout the country, Black and Latino residents, as well as other communities of color, face persistent disparities which negatively impact health, wellbeing and wealth-building. These disparities did not happen by accident. They are the result of historical systemic barriers to opportunity and disinvestment in urban communities, many of which are still woven into the fabric of our institutions. Read more and access report.
Enola Aird, Global Activist, Appointed to the The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven Board of Directorstag:gnhcommunity.ning.com,2023-01-31:3365802:BlogPost:2036392023-01-31T16:07:46.000ZThe Community Foundation for GNHhttps://gnhcommunity.ning.com/profile/TheCommunityFoundationforGNH

New Haven, CT (Oct. 26, 2022) The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) awarded $7.2 Million to The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven on Monday in support of work to make the small business landscape more equitable.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and these grants will specifically be used to help provide support for those small business owners who may have previously experienced barriers to accessing financial support and other services needed to start and grow a business,” Governor Lamont said in prepared release.

The Community Foundation will manage the award through its subsidiary, The Community Foundation Mission Investments Company (TCF-MIC), which is working with local entrepreneurial support organizations (ESOs) and small business owners to create business-support network called the New Haven Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (NHE3).
Sitting abandoned for nearly two decades, the community center affectionately known as the “Shack” is once again a haven for young people and families in New Haven’s West Hills neighborhood. The reopening is the result of neighbors of all ages coming together to fundraise and volunteer their time to renovate and staff the center.

“It is a beautiful success,” said West Hills Alder Honda Smith, who led organizing efforts to reopen the center and is now a daily presence as a volunteer. “The game room is up and running and kids are utilizing the space tremendously. We have over 500 residents come through a month.”

The community-driven project began with neighborhood meetings and a fundraising campaign for the nonprofit created to run the Shack - 333 Valley Street Center, An Intergenerational Organization. The Community Foundation provided the project’s first grant, $30,000 made available from Stepping Forward, the $26 Million initiative to advance equity and address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The City of New Haven committed $135,000 to upgrading the building’s HVAC system and the state of Connecticut contributed a $550,000 grant to build a music production and recording studio in an abandoned storage room. Continue reading here.
Donors and sponsors propel The Great Give to raise $3.4 Million for a record 500 nonprofitstag:gnhcommunity.ning.com,2022-05-11:3365802:BlogPost:1998902022-05-11T16:31:30.000ZThe Community Foundation for GNHhttps://gnhcommunity.ning.com/profile/TheCommunityFoundationforGNH

New Haven, CT (August 31, 2021) The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (The Foundation) is excited to announce the members of the first BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color) Cohort for Nonprofit Leadership program. The new career development program was conceived in early 2021 as part of The Foundation’s Stepping Forward commitment to help the Greater New Haven community recover from the impact of COVID-19 and to advance racial equity throughout the region.

“Recognizing that current nonprofit executive leaders are retiring, we saw an opportunity to help create a pipeline for new, more diverse leadership. This program intentionally focuses on building leadership and practical skills of people of color who are already part of the local nonprofit workforce and aspire to senior positions,” says Jackie Downing, Director of Grantmaking and Nonprofit Support at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

The program framework was designed by co-leads: Dr. David Garvey, Director of the University of Connecticut (UConn) Department of Public Policy’s Nonprofit Leadership Program and Management Consultant Cynthia Rojas, along with adjunct instructor topic experts and seasoned practitioners. CONTINUE READING
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven Awards Nearly $4 Million to Greater New Haven Nonprofitstag:gnhcommunity.ning.com,2021-08-12:3365802:BlogPost:1964482021-08-12T15:00:25.000ZThe Community Foundation for GNHhttps://gnhcommunity.ning.com/profile/TheCommunityFoundationforGNH

Aid Helps Nonprofits in Recovery from Pandemic-related Revenue Losses and Operating Challenges

New Haven, CT (August 5, 2021) – The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has awarded $3,881,700 in one-year and multi-year grants to 72 local nonprofit organizations through its competitive responsive grants for 2021. The total dollar amount more than doubled the amount typically awarded through The Foundation's largest competitive grant program and was made possible by an unprecedented increase in spending from The Foundation’s endowment.

The increased resources were made possible by Stepping Forward, a three-year $26 Million commitment The Foundation launched in early 2021 to address the impact of COVID-19 and advance racial equity. Stepping Forward added $1,675,000 to this year’s competitive responsive grant program, which provides general operating support to nonprofits working in twenty towns of Greater New Haven.

“This is far beyond what we’ve done in the past. It reflects new spending and new priorities around racial equity and COVID recovery,” said The Community Foundation President and CEO Will Ginsberg. "Of all the things The Community Foundation is doing in response to challenges of today, none is more important than supporting the recovery of the local nonprofit sector."

June 22, 2021 - For the past several years, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and Fairfield County’s Community Foundation have been working together on collective strategies to help dismantle structural and systemic racism and achieve equity in social and economic mobility in their communities. In January 2021, the three foundations were selected to collectively participate in the inaugural cohort of community foundations in NEON (Nexus for Equity + Opportunity Nationwide).

For the first time, this group of nine regional grant makers from across the nation will work to align goals, strategies, and outcome measures to increase the impact of each individual foundation and demonstrate the aggregate impact of community foundations on their local catchment areas. The NEON cohort hopes to catalyze nationwide progress and attract philanthropic support from individual donors and private foundations. The three Connecticut community foundations are focused on promoting equitable growth and opportunity in urban communities and the newly formed group will be known as the Connecticut Urban Opportunity Collaborative (CUOC).

“While our three community foundations have been working closely over the past several years to promote equitable urban opportunity in the communities we serve, the creation of the Connecticut Urban Opportunity Collaborative will allow us to more effectively collaborate and coordinate on shared priorities,” said Hartford Foundation President Jay Williams. “By working with community foundations from throughout the country, we can share what we are learning with an eye toward developing effective long-term strategies to begin to dismantle systemic and structural racism in our state.”

In support of these efforts, the trio of Connecticut community foundations have hired Cesar Aleman to serve as Director of the CUOC. In this role, Aleman will coordinate a team of community foundation chief executives and senior level staff to develop collective strategies to dismantle structural racism and advance social and economic mobility; aligning the strategic and programmatic efforts of the three foundations to create an actionable plan that builds on each organization’s individual strengths. This work will also involve developing a broad network of relationships with national, regional and local partners and manage collaborative investments including the development and distribution of grant applications, RFPs, monitoring and reporting.

“We all recognize the complexity and breadth of the systemic challenges we face are beyond any single organization’s ability to solve,” said Fairfield County’s Community Foundation President and CEO Juanita James. “By aligning our diversity of experience, talent, expertise and financial resources, we can put our learnings and ideas into action to achieve tangible and sustainable progress to truly achieve equity in our communities and society.”

“By working together with an urban focus, our three community foundations can write a new chapter in philanthropy in our state,” said Community Foundation for Greater New Haven President and CEO William Ginsberg. “Our work together will be to raise and distribute funds to promote greater opportunity and greater equity in Connecticut’s major cities. With sufficient public and private investment, our cities can lead Connecticut’s economic recovery and create opportunities for our urban residents, particularly people of color. CUOC’s goal is to help make that happen.”

Prior to taking in this position, Aleman was an organizer for the Greater Hartford Interfaith Action Alliance where he developed relationships with diverse communities and organizations to build power and implement practical solutions to specific social justice issues that currently include: housing, education, gun violence, criminal justice, and healthcare. Aleman has also provided communications and advocacy consultation as an independent contractor for the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund and was a racial equity consultant and strategist for RE-Center, Race & Equity in Education.

“The state of Connecticut is consistently ranked as one of the wealthiest states in the union, yet we are home to urban areas whose residents have consistently been denied equitable access to resources and have suffered the effects of poverty for generations,” Aleman said. “This collaborative has an opportunity to build on the work of each foundation to make unprecedented changes in our state. I am committed to work with our communities, our foundations, and public and private partners across the state and the country to make Connecticut a vibrant and prosperous home for all our residents.”

About The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven in Connecticut is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the U.S. and was established in 1928 as the permanent charitable endowment for New Haven and its surrounding communities of: Ansonia, Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, Derby, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Milford, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton, Wallingford, West Haven, and Woodbridge. In 2020, The Foundation began implementing a 5-year strategic plan and enacted new mission and vision statements toward expanding opportunity and equity in Greater New Haven. In 2021, it launched Stepping Forward, a $26 million commitment to addressing the impact of COVID-19 and advancing racial equity. The Foundation’s mission is to inspire, support, inform, listen to and collaborate with the people and organizations of Greater New Haven to build an ever more connected, inclusive, equitable and philanthropic community.

For more than three generations, generous local donors have built The Community Foundation’s endowment by establishing permanent funds or making gifts to existing funds that distribute grants to a broad variety of issues and organizations. These donors, past and present, make their gifts to ensure that programs and causes that matter most to them will be supported today and forever. As of December 31, 2020, The Foundation’s assets were valued at more than $720 million. Hurst Jr., president and CEO of the supplier development council. “You can’t have a successful economy where a whole portion of folks can’t participate.”
