I Saw the Revolution in So Many of the Small Places We Call Home

YES! Magazine co-founder and editor at large Sarah van Gelder climbed into a 12-year-old, four-cylinder pickup truck and began a 12,000-mile journey to find out what people are doing in their communities about poverty, inequality, the climate crisis, and racism.

A New Lease on the Life of a Library, Thanks to a LISC Board Member

An op-ed in the New York Times touts the inspired work of LISC board member Michelle de la Uz and the Fifth Avenue Committee, our longtime partner. The organization is helping build affordable housing atop a branch library in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn—one of many city libraries that serves as a community resource center for a diverse, historically underinvested area. LISC New York made a $250K predevelopment loan and NEF has committed more than $10 million in equity.

Celebrating Latino Histories, Affirming Latino Futures

Ricardo Flores, director of LISC San Diego, kicks off our recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month with a blog about how working in partnership with Latino communities is key to the health of the country, and part of the fundamental relationship between local and national prosperity. "The conditions of the Latino population today provide us with a peek into the wellbeing of our society tomorrow and in the years to come," writes Flores.

CDFI Fund Fuels Economic Opportunity

LISC will seed a new small business development fund and spur healthy food-related enterprises with this week's award from the federal Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund). The funding will help support entrepreneurs, create jobs, expand local incomes and reduce blight in low-income areas.
