DREW helps our clients identify alkaline vegetables, herbs, and seasonings that provide our bodies the greatest nutritional benefits with a 1-on-1 visit to your local health food store.

 Empowering Endeavors

DREW created Empowering Endeavors, a cultural studies program consisting of workshops for education institutions and youth-based organizations interested in providing intervention programs for at-risk youth.

This extensive program consists of cultural studies, cultural arts & performance, health awareness, counseling/mentor services, and fitness activities, in an effort to empower youth of color to live to their greatest potential daily.

Ayana,

Welcome to GNH Community. Although you are not in the service area of our Community Foundation we have accepted you membership because we believe you may have valuable information to share with our other members. Members may post information that they think will be of interest to nonprofits, civic organizations, the people they serve or the general public. You may post calendared events on the events page, non-date specific information on the blog, pictures or video.

Your chances of connecting with other members greatly increases if you include a photo or logo on your profile, if you include your job title and\or if you "like" or comment on the post of members. Events are also noticed more often if you include a picture or logo.

Check out the groups created by other members; this is a great place to meet people that share your interest and to ask questions. You may request to join as many groups as you wish or start a new group. The creator of a group sets the parameters for membership. If you have a question about a group, please write to the owner (the person who initiated the group).

If you have questions or suggestions as to how we can make GNH Community more useful please let me know.

GNH Community is funded by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Neighborhoods: What is Working

Leadership Is a Process of Community

Martin Luther King, Jr. did not march for freedom and equality alone. He was the visionary voice for the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of people. When we deconstruct leadership, we will not find a hero at the heart of leadership. We will find community.

What to Do When the Door to the Status Quo Opens Slightly

There are times when you manage to open the door ever so slightly to the status quo -- organizations and institutions that have power and resources to back up their perspective and mandate. To make inroads you must walk through that door and engage with the very people you think are the cause of the problem.

Freeing Yourself from the Consumer Culture

Peter talks with Eric Zimmer, host and producer of The One You Feed, named one of the Best Health Podcasts of All Time by The Huffington Post. They discuss the four pillars of the free market ideology, our longing for perfection, how questions bring us together and answers alienate us . . . and much more.

Open Streets Project Revamped

The Open Streets Project has undergone some changes over the last year. We bid a sad farewell to project co-founder, the Alliance for Biking & Walking, who are moving on to other things, and we happily welcomed a new partner, international Open Streets leader 8 80 Cities. We are excited for all the possibilities and energy this partnership will bring.

ProMedica CEO Joins LISC Board of Directors

Randy Oostra, CEO of Toledo-based ProMedica Health System, brings 40 years of health care and management expertise to LISC’s national board. His appointment comes at a time when LISC is intensifying its work to upend health disparities across the U.S., by investing in the well-being of people and places. It’s a strategy that Oostra has pioneered through ProMedica, boosting good health outcomes and opportunity for local communities.

To Solve Youth Homelessness, Talk to Young People

As a teenager, Da’Quan Wilson was homeless, sleeping in friends’ apartments, at relatives’ homes and even in a cemetery. Today, he works as a “Community Connector” with LISC Philadelphia partner People’s Emergency Center (PEC), reaching out to young people who may be undergoing the same sorts of challenges he once did. In our increasingly digital age, community connectors meet people face-to-face, to share information about resources, build neighborhood connection and invite community participation. Many become local leaders in the process.

One Day of Service Among 8,395 (that’s 23 years)—and Counting

The day we memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy is special indeed—and so are the other 364 days a year when LISC AmeriCorps members serve their communities, as they have for the past two plus decades.
