The wildly innovative Karel Husa conceived of Les Couleurs Fauves (Vivid Colors) as a musical interpretation of the French Impressionist and Fauvist styles of painting. This evocative work explores the contrasting colors that a wind ensemble can produce.
Richard Strauss’s chamber piece Serenade for Winds helped to launch his career as a successful composer and conductor. The work’s long, arching melodic lines and rich harmonic textures would become part of his signature style.
Hiraizumi is University of New Haven composer Simon Hutchinson’s tribute to Japan’s idyllic World Heritage Site of the same name. This innovative work uses winds and electro-acoustical sound to evoke Hiraizumi’s special tranquility. This is a world premiere.
Cartoon is composer Paul Hart’s tribute to the Saturday morning cartoons that were an integral part of many children’s weekends. Listeners are sure to reminisce over the work’s dramatic opening credits, cat and mouse tease, and romantic interludes.
Additional music:
Festive Overture (Shostakovich), Danza de los Duendes (Galbraith), and And Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest (Duffy).
