While today jazz and blues may be regarded as different musical genres, jazz music evolved out of blues musical traditions creating a fuzzy distinction between what is strictly “blues” or “jazz.” As both blues and jazz music spread throughout the country, different dance traditions evolved to similar music. Due to this overlap, we have multiple ways to dance to slow jazz. Join instructor Laura Chieko for a day-long exploration comparing and contrasting several ways of dancing to slow jazz music, including vernacular solo jazz movements, ballroomin’ blues, slow Lindy, and slow balboa.
All are welcome:
~ Dancers from all backgrounds are encouraged to join us!
~ While some of the material will be thought at an intermediate level and some dancing experience might help, non-dancers (yet) are welcome too!
